The 4080 is moderately faster, but the 6950 is pretty damn close (check the benchmarks[tomshardware.com] if you don't believe me). And for literally half the price, the 6950 is definitely the better buy.
Actually the new raytracing in unreal engine 5 runs as good or a little better on AMD.
To the institutions and corporations, consoles are king. High performance Ray tracing is coming to the new consoles through whatever black magic or encoding changes they need to make. And that means it's coming to AMD because the consoles are 100 percent AMD PC hardware.
In fact it's already here with unreal engine 5, it just needs to be further implemented and almost ever game studio is adopting it.
So sick of people commenting on ray tracing as if it's something that should determine the purchase of a card. Go look at gaming benchmarks from hardware unboxed, gamers nexxus, jayz2cents or any reputable tech site. RT tanks your FPS and still to this day isn't worth the performance hit especially if you game at 1440p and above.

It's a personal choice. You might not care for ray tracing but it's a pretty important feature for me at this price range for GPUS. Ray tracing is not well implemented in all games, but for the games that does ray tracing well for me it's well worth the performance hit. I game at 5120x1440, to me Control with ray tracing on at 70fps is far superior visually than 120fps with ray tracing off,, similarly I liked Cyberpunk much better at 45-50fps with ray tracing than 70+ fps with ray tracing off. I know to some people getting a high frame rate is the most important thing but it's simply not that important to me,, I can tell there's a difference between 60 and 120 fps,, but I don't even consider one as better than the other.
It is if ones is prioritizing the benefits of ray tracing over frame rate.
I'm so sick of people commenting primarily about frame rates, as if that's the only thing that should determine whether a card should be purchased.
Majority of gamers prefer frame rate performance. Hence why we have high refresh rate monitors and the like. None of my friends care about RT gimmicks that don't look all that better to get subpar frame rates. If that's you, enjoy. You need a minimum of a 4080(crap value) or a 4090 which is more expensive to enjoy RT on 5 games lol.
Card still ranks 8th on the graphics card ranking, so for this price, a decent deal for sure. This would be a nice upgrade from my 1070TI which still works great. Even that 6700XT for 369 would be a nice upgrade for me

I'm still rocking my 1070 and am tempted. I really don't have any new games I'm excited for that need the upgrade so im probably gonna hold out for one more generation.
The 7800xt should be releasing soon and it will be similar in performance have better RT, FSR3 lower power consumption and hopefully cost the same that's why AMD is trying to finish off what's left of their stock.

Just an FYI. The 7900xt smokes this card. Keep that in mind. This card needs to be a lot lower in price. Think $500 or less. People shouldn't be used to getting hosed on cards anymore.
Paid $750 back in 2017 for my 1080ti. How much faster is the 6950xt compared with the 1080ti? I play at 1440p for now.
I got a smoking deal for my 1070TI at the time for 460-470 ish. Your card has probably aged the best of the prev gen cards. I'd keep it for a while until the prices stabilize some.

I know why frame rates matter, and why lots (not all) of gamers prioritize it over aesthetics. In fairness, barring a game engine cap or CPU bottleneck, any graphics setting above minimum (including resolution) is lowering the glorious frame rate toward aesthetics, so you're not a pure frame rate junkie, you're just further toward it on the continuum. I was making a point using the same wording for effect.
That said, the difference between ultra settings without RT and with RT isn't dramatic but it is noticeable, the same as the difference between 180 FPS and 240 FPS on a 240hz monitor isn't dramatic in practice but is noticeable. THAT said, the 4080 is a crap deal lol, but the 4090 is actually not a horrific value if frame rates matter to you, depending, as it is near twice as fast as the 6950 XT in many titles at higher resolutions, at not much more than twice the cost, with better drivers, and yes the ability to run some titles in RT if you ever feel the need to cheat on frame rate and see the other side.

Just fyi, userbenchmark is well known as being an awful source of actual benchmarks. The admin has gone unhinged and adds a weird, angry fanboy editorial complaining about every single recent product from AMD. Also, the benchmarks are quite off from reputable reviewers (e.g. Techpowerup, Hardware Unboxed, Gamer's Nexus etc). I'm one of those people who upgrades, builds, tweaks, and benchmarks and also found that userbenchmark is the outlier and effectively makes up algorithms to favor Intel and NVIDIA.
These guys have a great long-term relative performance benchmark: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-s...0-ti.c2877 The RX 6950 XT is about 99% better here vs. userbenchmark's 62% "effective speed" difference.

Initially, I was very hopeful for the RX 7800 XT and 7700 XT. Now, I'm not so sure given the gap in performance between the RX 7900 XT/XTX already along with the $900 price tag for the 7900 XT.
Also, with TPU showing the RX 7900 XT (baseline 100%) as being only 9% faster than the RX 6950 XT, I'm concerned about the rest of the stack. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-s...0-xt.c3912 If they had simply named the 7900 XT the 7800 XT like last gen, the comparisons to last gen would've been better. I hope my suspicions are wrong and the mid-range/budget SKUs (Navi 32, 33) are better than expected.

I would say no. The ray tracing performance just isn't where it needs to be for $700 and while the rasterization is good, it's not good enough to justify the price IMHO.
The 6800(XT) will give you a similar enough performance profile for ~$500.
Meanwhile uyou can probably find an RTX 3080(TI) which will offer much better ray tracing performance for ~$700 if you are lucky.
If you can find an RTX 4070TI at around the MSRP of $799 you'll get a card with similar rasterization, way better ray tracing, and a better software feature set going forward (DLSS 3, etc)
Similar story with the RX 7900XT at $899 (albeit with better raster and weaker RT than a 4070TI).
Most importantly however, prices seem to be coming down. If you can afford to wait you will be rewarded for your patience.
So yeah. Even if you want to spend this much on a GPU I don't think this is the sweet spot.

reference just has lower voltage management so don't try to OC as much and a no thrills design
