I've received mine today. So far, it's been working fine. Several things that I noticed:

1. There was faint burnt plastic smell when I opened the box (as someone noted in review).

2. Did not have any issue with WiFi/Alexa connection.

3. There was some sort of software push after connecting the speaker to WiFi. After the update, I heard brief popping/crackling noise from the speaker during reset. Haven't heard it again since.

4. You can disable communication function and put Alexa into 'do not disturb' mode. You can also turn off mic to not use Alexa.

5. The speaker do announce when you change mode, although I do not plan to change it often.

6. I see a small orange dot LED lit in the middle during use. It is not that bothering (to me at least).

7. The only complaint that I have so far is the remote - buttons are somewhat recessed, not easily accessible.

I plan to test drive the speaker for next few days and decide wheter I would like to return it. So far, it seems to be working fine.

There is 100+ of these units in 'like new' condition for sale. This makes me wary about how solid this product is....

The reviews are pretty hit or miss. A lot of them claim failure in a year or less. I'd be worried about an Amazon warehouse buy with this.

Any idea how this compares to the Magnifi 2 with sub for $200 on Amazon? Thinking of this with a sub or that one and can't pick between the 2.
The magnifi 2 is new

Bought this sound bar as new a few months ago. It's very good. This price is a bargain.

It also survived several blows and climbs from my toddler.

I just got the Magnifi mini and am impressed with what it can do for the price. Yeah it's not audiophile quality but it's better than most the bars in it's price range I've tested

This has me tempted, I'm coming from a Vizio Soundstage (shelf unit with a down firing sub...not well planned out.) I was going to skip a sound bar and just use powered reference speakers but not getting them under this cheap. Also the vocal clarity feature could be super helpful.

My biggest question is with Arc is it simple to turn off and use the built in TV speakers?

I live with someone who only likes the soundbar on for movies. Which is no problem just using optical, but I'd prefer it automatically power on with the TV unless I turn it off.

Facts I don't when believe in buying used electronics most of the time it's better to spend a little more on a new one.And save a yourself a headache.
For almost anything else I would agree, but for speaker systems, there are a lot of reasons people return them which are just not valid.

A lot of times, they buy because they want some new feature like Atmos, then they hook up and realize they cannot tell the difference or that their other equipment would need to be upgraded to get the feature.

Other times they just don't have a clue and when the system doesn't perform because their TV doesn't pass Dolby Digital Plus through to the ARC port, they blame the speakers.

Poor engineering of the products (TV's especially) and poor CEC programming has made surround sound way more complicated than it has to be.

Additionally, the general population doesn't dig into anything to understand how it works, they just return it when it "didn't work".

That being said, for me it would have to be a pretty good deal to risk wasting my time .

This is probably a question of how your TV implements HDMI-CEC. Some will go back to TV speakers once the soundbar is turned off, but others are very confused.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was concerned about. I can always go optical though if it's an issue.

hate that they don't include a simple $3 subwoofer out in these units. i have an extra sub and would pay the $89 for this if i could hook up my sub
I totally agree!

Some DAC's (digital to analog audio converters) can be used to add your real external powered sub back into the system.

You can wire them to the optical output of the TV (if it remains active when a soundbar is attached as many TV's do) then use an HDMI connection to allow CEC to raise and lower sub volume with the TV remote concurrently as it raises and lowers the soundbar volume.

I would love to tell you which one to use, but it's kind of hit and miss depending on your TV, soundbar, and other items like your streaming device.

Still can be a problem if your TV needs the speakers turned on and off in the menu. Then you would need to do that whenever you turn soundbar on or off, since optical is one way. Otherwise you might have speakers and soundbar running at the same time which isn't good.

PS - Based on your name, are you Navy?

I'll have to ask the TCL subreddit, I got the 55" series 5 with that $200 BB deal.

Also no I changed my username a couple of weeks ago just to annoy a guy with a similar seal name who insisted on needlessly arguing with me ad nauseam even though I provided multiple highly regarded sources from the start. Immature sure, but I was still on the silly made up name they gave me lol I should change it again though, don't want anyone to take offense.

This is an example of a converter if the TCL subreddit checks out. Will convert optical to RCA and volume controlled by HDMI-ARC.

Of course, sometimes things don't play well together since the CEC standard is loose and manufacturer implementations vary quite a bit between devices.

Pretty much try one to see if it works.

I understand your pain!

There is always a 12 year old in his parents basement who has no brain and plenty of time. Best not to engage.

One of the biggest problems with the internet: Maybe I am an experienced engineer giving you good advice or maybe I dropped out of school at junior high school level and don't know crap... either way I appear the same on the internet.

Slickdeals and reddit seem to be the worst, because while there may be a lot of smart people, the dummies usually are very vocal and willing to wear you out to win!

Wait, scratch "there may be a lot of smart people on reddit"

One of the reviews mentions that there's voice prompts for each mode change (like it will literally say "music mode" at the current volume you have it set to) and that the LEDs are very distracting. If you don't use the WiFi features, they blink constantly.

No options to turn off either.

You could open it up and disconnect the LEDs but that voice prompt? No thanks.
You can turn off the voice prompt. I would suggest not basing your entire opinion of a product off of one idiot's review on Amazon who doesn't know what they are doing.
