the risk of buying instruments for beginners is many end up quitting. The price range for guitar is beginner around $500, intermediate around $800-1000, and above $1200 can easily be end game for many professional musicians. In fact, Cory Wong used to play with a cheaper model strat than this model.
I'd say for a 13 year old, unless if he's already really good, I'd get a Mexican Fender, something like Player series on sale. These are solid for intermediate, and if he outgrows it, he can use it as an "experimental" guitar to learn guitar modding and maintenance skills.

How does SD get these special deal links but you can't get them by just going to the site (or even from their deals newsletter)?

Add &emailprice=t to the end of the URL. That's always Adorama's deal format.

A lot of Fender deals these days. It's almost like they actually reduced the MSRP.

Also if you don't see the exact color/neck combo you want, it's worth firing off an email through their site asking them to price match one of the sale colors. A few people did this last time with success. Ymmv - took about 48 hours to get approved, so it is possible you miss the actual deal and they say no.

I just ordered the Strat in Olympic white with Rosewood FB!
I'm thinking a white pickguard is needed for the "Excalibur" vibe.

I tried it with the ultra. They had cobra blue, I asked about RH Texas tea and they said no.

Is this too much of a guitar for someone starting out with electric guitars? Thinking about getting this for my 12 year old who is transitioning into electric guitars from acoustic.
