I'd say for a 13 year old, unless if he's already really good, I'd get a Mexican Fender, something like Player series on sale. These are solid for intermediate, and if he outgrows it, he can use it as an "experimental" guitar to learn guitar modding and maintenance skills.

I bought one of these to play and it didn't sound like jazz at all. If anything I'd describe the sound as "amateurish noise".

Here's a deal on Schecter guitar I saw here on slickdeals.

Ibanez also makes a lot of great guitars in the $300.00 - $500.00 price range.
I bought the Squier Classic Vibe 50's tele in butterscotch when it came up on Slickdeals a month or two ago. It's amazing and a joy to play, would definitely recommend as a first guitar. I'll never sell it, feels and sounds excellent. It's the only non-american made guitar I have and I usually wouldn't consider a gloss neck, but it's fast and not 'sticky' at all. I paid $270.61 all in from ProAudioStar, advertised as used, came brand new.

The guitar however is pristine, hang tags still on it. It is a 2021 model with the 75th anniversary mark on the headstock. I was scared the guitar would be damaged as bad as the box looked but I guess the hardcase did its j9b.
