"The pocket that is designed to carry the laptop does have some padding at the bottom. The padding in front of and behind the laptop is the thickest. I carry my laptop and iPad in it and they both seem well protected. I have even accidentally dropped the backpack and both items were unharmed even with all the other items I carry along with my laptop and tablet.

I had to return as his 17" laptop won't fit. It is an MSI GF72VR 7RF from Costco. It is 16.5" x 11.3".
You can get the zipper closed but the corners are really protruding and pushing in the fabric with zero protection.
So make sure your laptop will fit.
Otherwise the bag seems pretty decent.

It's Amazon basics... You'll need to buy 4 to equate to buying 1 decently made backpack.
