First, it's not $40 anymore. They repriced the phone at $70 + $40 for service = $110, and it would still be SIM locked for 180 days, assuming they unlock it at all.
But even for other phones that are still $0 on Metro's site, you basically can't check out at all because either the site is broken or they have disabled all sales. You just get an error message on checkout.
You might still be able to do it in-store, but the only phones left are pretty junky and it's not really worth it (for me).

this one is 8gigs ram/256gigs storage
the $40 one is 6gigs ram/128gigs storage
the $40 metro is a better bang for the buck for most people.
my 2 yr old 'android 10' phone has 128gigs internal storage. it still has 90+ gigs available.
i dont play intensive games so that extra 2gigs ram is wasted
