These are the best soldering irons you can find for electric or electronic wire and circuit board soldering. For some other purposes, you may need more than 30W, but those irons are usually very inexpensive, because they do not need to be too accurate. If you frequently solder on vehicle electronics and such, I would recommend to get this for this purpose alone.

Remember -- wattage doesn't equate to how hot the iron gets, it simply equates to how quickly it can recover heat once it's being used. If you soldering one offs here and there, this should be fine. I personally would like more wattage (up to 50W at least) but this should be a good iron for someone starting out or someone who doesn't solder much during each "session".

I agree. Having the variable wattage is a huge difference. I have one from Weller not variable one and it gets really hot once all heated up. I something needs to unplug it while I make adjustments to the wires etc..
Now I connect my solder to a lamp dimmer to adjust the temperature so it's nice at this price point

What about circuit boards for consoles such as play station which has small solder points. Is this good for that?

I'm also pretty much an amateur at this point but I need another iron for my home that I mainly use for auto work. My car is parked maybe 50 feet from an outlet. I was thinking about grabbing the Milwaukee or one of the ryobi ones. Any feedback or should I just break out the extension cord as needed?

I ave a Weller soldering gun and it is so hot it burns circuit boards. Is this better or wait for something else. I normally am soldering wires together and the gun is very fast. But for smaller items, the gun is overkill and will not work. If not this, is there something better for an occasional solder?

Maybe something like this would be more versatile Weller WLC200 80 Watt Hobby and Stained Glass Soldering Station

I have used both weller and a hakko at my work. This one is great but I have heard a lot of good recommendations for "pinecil" and it is rated at 65w and has very precise temp controls and usb powered.

I really recommend you avoid the Milwaukee one. The collet that holds the heating tip will melt due to poor design/material choice. Haven't tried Ryobi ones yet but look into reviews before you buy the Milwaukee.
