Got it. Thanks. How many tabs do you consider a lot? I rarely have over 5 tabs or windows open unless it's during a fantasy baseball or fantasy football draft.

My wife usually has 50 going at one time, but she won't be using this computer, and that's what I consider to be a lot…to overkill.
I'm 30+ tabs... If I am really into it I can hit 50

It's interesting spme folks say 8gb is enough some saying 16gb is min..

If one is purely only doing office work like word excel and browsing many many tabs in Chrome.

But no video editing , rendering etc so do we still need 16gb?

180$ inst a lot but .

If M5 mini comes in few years at 500 600$ base rather save the $200.

I don't think this future proofing makes any sense.

When the next gen comes everyone will have the itch and ask if we should upgrade..that is always the case. And in some cases the upgrade may have enhancements.

Hmmmm
I was only browsing, and Safari and Chrome would cause the entire machine to come to a halt. Then when I would reboot it tried to open the same windows and it was a vicious cycle sometimes! Big Grin Mad

Yep. M1 mini 8GB, 256GB drive. I bought it when it first came out. Now I have M1 mini 16GB, 512GB with the 10gb NIC. My current one is a beast. The 8GB was driving me nuts! It was like maybe the ram swap was optimized for certain programs but not for browsing.

I think that it's foolish for some people to make blanket statements and say that 8 GB is enough for everybody or that 8 GB is not enough and 16 GB is the minimum needed.

Everybody is different and has different work flows and needs. Does everybody wear the same size shoes?

For some people, 8 GB will be fine. For others, they'll need more. I mean, it all depends.

And some people have sloppier computer habits than others.

The person who has 72 tabs open constantly and all sorts of other things open and they don't really pay attention to their desktop is going to need more RAM compared to a person who is aware of what's taking place on their desktop and doesn't have a gazillion things open at the same time.

Hope this helps those who are deciding between 8gb & 16gb for video editing instead of reading random comments here

What is a good way to get this through educators? I can't believe all of you all affiliated with a school.

Exactly! If you keep 100 Chrome tabs open (for whatever reason), then by all means get one with a 16GB RAM. If you're like me -and sounds like you- I'll spend that $180 for something else.

Does buying apple egift card from amazon using chase amazon prime rewards still get 5% cashback or is it not considered for 5% cashback. Can someone confirm? Also, should the apple gift cards be phsically purchase from a grocery store to get 5% cashback or even the egift cards from those stores are eligble. can someone please confirm if they already purchase through gift cards

Just purchased, was looking to replace an out of date chromebox. For us to buy a mid range chromebox that'll stop accepting updates in 2028, it would've been $475, this seemed like the better deal. Didn't upgrade the ram, since we mostly use for web browsing as a desktop.

I wanted an Apple gift card so I can purchase this from Apple. $600 in Apple gift cards, purchased from a supermarket on a Chase or Discover card (both offer 5% back at supermarkets this quarter), should net $30 in cashback. Then purchase the Mac mini from Apple using the gift cards. Any problem/reason not to go this route?
Were you able to replicate this? did you buy physical cards or egift cards?

I wonder if this has the same problem as MacBook Air 256gb with 8gb.
Yup. It does. If you're talking about cutting the SSD speed in half, that is.

The m1/8gb/256gb was a fungible computer, fast enough ssd to page you along with just 8gb. Not sure that's the case with the m2. Given the limited amount of performance improvements to the m2 vs the m1, I'd get an m1 mac if you're going to buy the base config.

Apple made the m1 macs too darn good. That made a lot of mac pros rethink even needing a Studio or wanting the m2 versions.

Thx OP in 1 for Mac 16GB / 256GB. I have 2 TB external SSD for storage as I just can't justify the exorbitant prices for the SSD. The RAM is non-negotiable though as I am a power user and want to keep this computer for at least 5 years or more (my current 2012 Mac Mini lasted me 10 YEARS! Amazing!).

I think the 16GB/256GB SSD is the sweet spot at $740 taxed to CA
