Simplified answer:

Most phones, PCs and laptops were not designed to handle the 300 ohm loads of "real" headphones.

So although sound will come out, it will be anemic and lacking deep bass.

So the goal of these amps is not to make the sound louder, but to drive the headphones from the deepest notes to the highest, without distortion

Not perfect, but a pretty good headphone amp for the money.

(like always, remove space for detailed measurements and review)

I have owned all 3 at some point. The Atom and Magni are a little cleaner to me. This has a little warmness to the sound. I liked all 3 amps, but ended up keeping my Schiit stuff. They were all a bit redundant to each other. The best combo IMO is the Modi Multibit with the Magni 3. I know that DACs with any type of distortion get trashed, but for me that DAC is still something special. Of course, I am a bit subjective and not 100% on the measurements only train.

For a shorter answer, pick the ecosystem you want because they are all close. I like Schiit because there is an EQ you can add also, and made in USA.

How does this compare to Schiit Magni and JDS Labs ATOM? or any other amps around $100?

If you're going from your computer, you would need a DAC to go in front of this.

Might as well get a refurb SoundBlasterG6 (DAC/Amp combo)for $89 if you're starting out.

or buy this and buy a less than or around $100 DAC to go with this. The Atom DAC or Schitt Modi are very popular.
Some USB c to sux adapters have dacs built in

I use mine at work with a small lightning to aux dac. It's a great, small setup.

Can you also educate me how this would be configured?
It looks like you plug the headphone into the front, but would you run a headphone jack-to-RCA L+R splitter or something to plug into the back? Or how would you plug a PC into the back of this? And why are there two sets of input?
No snark intended: if you don't know what's it for, then most likely you don't need it. If you are happy with your phone/PC output to your earphones, then you definitely don't need it. Don't chase that rabbit down the hole.

I have audiophile headphones and amps that don't get used often. Most of the time I just use my phone and earbuds. They're good enough for streaming and midfi mp3.

The PC line out and headphone out is so noisy that I do use an outboard DAC/Amp. Much cleaner and better signal to noise ratio.

For anyone who has a 16" m1 macbook pro, how would this amp compare to the built-in headphone jack? The built-in jack sounds pretty good to me already, but I've never used a dedicated amp

Thx for the suggestion. But I saw micro USB and panicked. Anything similar with USB C?

I bought a Schiit fulla to amp my sansa fuze to bigger headphones, and blew it up. I'd like a solution that can take analog audio from a fuze (or similar), and amp it, with USB-C type power source. Maybe that was the problem, using the mic input as an audio source. Id like one that can be tuned, too, like lower the bass and crank the treble.

Any ideas, anyone?

Educate me please. Why would somebody want to amplify their headphones. Wouldn't that be bad for your hearing?
This is for high impedance headphones. Not your everyday headphones.
