Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

But we can easily do free returns with brand new ones?
Think of it like eBay but with slightly better quality control and only one seller. You're buying a used, out of date item that used to cost $1000+ for $300. They want to get rid of them. They don't want people to be endlessly sending them back and paying for the shipping. And then they have to re-inspect and re-format the thing again. The return policy is to deter 'test rentals'. Heck, a lot of companies are doing this with new items too. None of the big ones like Amazon yet, but a lot of individual famous chain stores are putting the brakes on free returns.

I am amused by the odder terms "some items are ONLY for commercial environments and not home users" (because a server is dangerous like an industrial saw or lung vaporizing chemicals) and you can't resell it even if you're not a 'reseller'.

Dell Financial Services- was wondering the same to get the Amex Plat free $200.
Thank you. Sounds like I'll need to wrestle for the credit for my "free" laptop.

Bought a Dell Latitude 5490 few days back and saw better spec Dell Latitude 7390 for the same price and thinking I can return the previous one. Now it seems I'm loosing $45 when I'm going to return one. Even I ordered a grade A, It came with a big sticker on top of the lid. I'm not sure is for the protection or it is there to cover the scratches. Anyone Has experience retuning one to Dell refurb?

Thx man, for the partial refund would you mind sharing:
-whether you called or emailed them
-were they chill about it, or did you have to complain a lot?
Hey there, I just sent them an email and attached the PDF battery report. I said that the unit was great, but I would expect to have the battery at least 90%. I actually asked for a replacement and they came out within a couple of days saying they didnt have any in stock, so they offered a 35 usd refund, which I took.

I would complain about the sticker, but as far as returns, they give you more than enough warnings browsing and during the purchase. It's not Amazon or Walmart.

Speaking of which, I see the exact model I bought from Dell listed on Amazon for about the same price 'Renewed'. I don't regret the purchase, but I do wonder about which one would have been better to buy, the one that's definitely refurbished by the manufacturer and not 'certified' third party, or the one on the website with a better return policy.

I bought one of these 2 weeks ago in on the last sale. A few points.

I bought a grade A refurb Latitude 7490 touch unit and was not impressed with the "refurbishment". Someone might have run a rag over it but that was about it. It was disappointing as the Dell Latitude 5300 refurb I got several months ago was perfect. Also, weirdly, the Intel i7 sticker was very misaligned so I removed it. There was more dust, debris, human hairs, and skin flakes embedded under the keys than I have ever seen. Every key was like a clown car of human hair. I'd think I had gotten them all out from under the keys then another would pop-up. It was disgusting. I called to rerun it but they have me a moderate discount for the hassle so I kept it and finished cleaning it. I used the little brush for cleaning my electric razor to get underneath the keys.

The unit works fine and is upgradeable to Win 11 after I upgraded the RAM memory to 16 gigs. The battery worked but was old and did not hold a charge for all that long so I bought a new one for $32 from Amazon. As a pleasant surprise, the back was easily removable to access the components so the battery swap and RAM upgrade was a smooth process. It's plenty speedy for almost any browsing and office use. General usability and build quality are much better than a cheapo new $250 - $300 unit with a cheap screen, creaky chassis, and mushy keyboard.
Just hope you don't have to replace the entire keyboard. I have a Dell 7577.. oh man. Literally 60 screws and almost complete disassembly for a $20 part because one key was broken. The keyboard itself was 29 or 30 tiny screws. Other than that - my laptop seems like good build quality and the normal replaceable components are easy to get to by removing one screw / backplate.

I received mine yesterday and the battery report showed full charge capacity of 41.4 Wh. Is that a good range to request some kind of remedy for the battery?

Got my 5300 2-in-1s today. FedEx texted me yesterday they would have to be signed for. Guy just threw them at the door and left. Typical. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

They said B grade but the look new to me. Unfortunately, the stickers underneath say they're FedEx refurbs. So I'll have to go over them quite thoroughly before putting them to use. EEK!

i bought an A grade laptop and looked new to me also. the battery was 75% though but works fine. underneath was the FedEx refurb sticker that i thought strange. your B grade experience is interesting and may consider that when looking for a refurb desktop. FedEx did have me sign for the thing, difficult to put any kind of signature on the pad though FWIW.

There's a lot of comments in refurb threads that FedEx refurbs have problems. Appearance-wise, at least, they look fine. I was apprehensive about B grade laptops, especially with touchscreens, but the 5300 2-in-1s come up rarely.

For a desktop I care way less about how the case looks as long as all the ports and fans and buttons work.

I received Dell Latitude 7390 but seems have a bad hard disk. Run the diagnostic it shows up the error in the hard drive. How easy to replace the SSD on this one. Is it worth to ask for a replacement hard drive or should I get replacement laptop?

so how do i find out if the battery is new? you talked about 0 recharge cycles, is there something that will tell me how many recharge cycles?
Sorry, was not logged in, and thus, did not see all the questions about this. You can figure out the number of recharge cycles on a Dell laptop by going into the onboard diagnostics... Not the BIOS setup, but the onboard diagnostics...

To get there, on computer start up (during POST, i.e. before Windows starts booting), mash the F12 to get into the boot options menu, and then select the Diagnostics option. That should start up the Dell ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment. Once the assessment is run, swap to the "Configuration" tab if you are not already there, and then scroll down to the battery section. There you will see the number of "ChargeCycles" listed.

thanks. the battery they sent is about 75%, good enuf.

a computer repairman said not to keep the battery on constant charge when it is off. he showed a bulging Dell battery and thought the reason was constant charging. he thinks it's fine to run the charger when the pc is on however.

any thoughts on that? thanks.

In the BIOS setup, most recent Dell laptops that I have seen have a setting to let the computer know the laptop is primarily used while plugged into AC. And that does something with the charging routine to massively extend the battery life/longevity. So if that is your mode of use, take a look for those BIOS settings.

EDIT: I just took a look at my daily driver machine--an Inspiron 55xx that I got in November 2019. I use it primarily plugged into AC both at home and at work (bught an extra power brick so I do not have to carry that around). Anyway,I made the BIOS setting I mentioned above since the start, and now >3 years later with heavy daily use, the battery health is still listed as excellent. When I do use the machine unplugged, which is admittedly only very occasionally, the battery seems to last fine. So if do use your laptop while primarily plugged into AC, my experience is that making this BIOS setting can really help extend your battery's functional life.
