Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

In the BIOS setup, most recent Dell laptops that I have seen have a setting to let the computer know the laptop is primarily used while plugged into AC. And that does something with the charging routine to massively extend the battery life/longevity. So if that is your mode of use, take a look for those BIOS settings.

EDIT: I just took a look at my daily driver machine--an Inspiron 55xx that I got in November 2019. I use it primarily plugged into AC both at home and at work (bught an extra power brick so I do not have to carry that around). Anyway,I made the BIOS setting I mentioned above since the start, and now >3 years later with heavy daily use, the battery health is still listed as excellent. When I do use the machine unplugged, which is admittedly only very occasionally, the battery seems to last fine. So if do use your laptop while primarily plugged into AC, my experience is that making this BIOS setting can really help extend your battery's functional life.
thanks. good advice for us New Dell users. my daily driver machine is a Desk Top and am trying to start using this new desk top in a smart way. batteries are all new to me, as desktops are just a plug in and forget it style.

thankful for slickdeals running these cheap Dell refurbished deals, the Lattitudes seem to have a stellar reputation.

a computer repairman said not to keep the battery on constant charge when it is off. he showed a bulging Dell battery and thought the reason was constant charging. he thinks it's fine to run the charger when the pc is on however.

any thoughts on that? thanks.
Sound like he doens't know what he's talking about. A laptop battery isn't on constant charge while it's plugged in, even if it's not being used. Once it reaches full charge, the charging circuit shuts off.

The question here being what happens when the battery discharges on its own? Does it keep topping it back up back to 100% from 98% or let it drop to 20% and bump it back up to 85%? It all depends on how the software manages the battery (which will be different from how the BIOS manages it when the computer is shut off).

In either case, I highly doubt it had anything to do with the battery swelling, which is more likely an outright manufacturing defect. Even run-down, badly maintained batteries don't usually spontaneously swell or leak.

We got one of these several months back and the thing was over heating so much that you couldn't put it on your lap. But it's a Dell, so I shouldn't be surprised by that.

a few things, the i7 laptops tend to run hotter if mem serves. also even though we use the term 'laptop', many laptops have fans and vents on the bottom of the laptop, ventilation is cut off thus the 'laptop' over heats. best to run these machines on a Table Top or a riser if possible.

Got a Dell 5300 2 in 1 touch 8 gen i7 with 16 gb ram two weeks ago. I am very pleased with the unit, I ran the battery report and had about 78% life, I contacted Dell and gave me a 35 usd refund.
Which battery report do you actually get a percentage from? Both the Dell Pre-Boot Diagnostics and powercfg just report charge cycles and capacity. Which test did you actually screen cap/pdf that they accepted as proof?

Also, are the fans on yours insanely loud? I have a bad feeling it's just the nature of these. There's the option to turn power to Quiet in the BIOS as well as turn off TurboBoost, but it's unclear to me how much performance you're losing by doing this.

Oh, I'm aware but I think it was an i5 version.

Sorry, was not logged in, and thus, did not see all the questions about this. You can figure out the number of recharge cycles on a Dell laptop by going into the onboard diagnostics... Not the BIOS setup, but the onboard diagnostics...

To get there, on computer start up (during POST, i.e. before Windows starts booting), mash the F12 to get into the boot options menu, and then select the Diagnostics option. That should start up the Dell ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment. Once the assessment is run, swap to the "Configuration" tab if you are not already there, and then scroll down to the battery section. There you will see the number of "ChargeCycles" listed.
I followed your steps and my ChargeCycles says 4, so they must've given me a new battery. Thanks!

One 5300 2-in-1 had 24 charge cycles and 94% left, the other had 134 charge cycles and only 64% left. Emailed them and asked for a replacement.

The heavily used laptop had TPM disabled for some reason. Found out when trying to install 11. Reset the BIOS.

They came with Samsung hard drives. They're both set up RAID (which seems to be default for these), so Samsung Magician can't see the drives and run a performance test on them. I'm hesitant to try to flip it to AHCI and screw it up and have to reinstall Windows again. I also see multiple threads with no consensus on whether AHCI or RAID is faster. There's users who claim to see significantly better performance with both modes. I'm more concerned about the one with the heavy use and bad battery. I don't have an external NVME reader, but I'm wondering if it's worth it buying one to pull it out and test it on another system.

I got a grade A 7490 and it looks like new. I did run the powercfg /batteryreport and it showed about 31000 out of 59000 capacity. Boot diagnostics showed 415 cycles used. I emailed them and attached the report and they are sending me a replacement battery. The ssd is a sata model and crystaldisk shows 90% health.

my powerconfig show's about 32000 out of 59000. After a couple days use, it seems to go from 40% to 5% really fast. Which report did you email them? the powerconfig or boot diagnostic one? Thanks

I didn't know about the boot diagnostics at the time, so I emailed [email protected] and said that my battery was only about 50% capacity and attached the battery-report.html file from powercfg. They replied the next day and shipped a battery a few days later. It's due to arrive tomorrow. I'll report back with the condition of it when I install it.

thanks for the reply. I guess I will try the same. did you have to specifically ask for a replacement battery or was it offered?

Mine was grade A but has a imprint from a sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Slightly annoying but tolerable. Otherwise, the condition looks pretty good, besides the battery issue

I didn't ask for anything is particular, I just reported the battery condition and they offered the replacement.

Picked up one the other day before it expired. Thanks OP! I will update here to let others know how it works after I test it.
