FWIW, It seems the crazy egg prices aren't as bad for organic/cage free/whatever. BJ's right now, store brand 5 dozen is $22 or 36.7 cents/egg. Egglands Best Cage Free is $8 for 24, or 33.3 cents/egg. Free range store brand brown eggs are $7 for 24, 29.2 cents/egg.
Are we able to reserve online to ensure stock availability?
How sad that EGGS make it to SD 😒

Just a couple years ago the local Aldi was selling eggs for less than $.30/dozen. Poor farmers must have been losing money at that price.

Any idea why everyone is convinced this "bird flu" is responsible for massive egg shortages yet around the corner in meat section the chicken is fully stocked?
Egg laying hens have been hit the hardest. Nearly 60 million birds have died. Mostly egg laying hens. The cost increase also has to do with increasing fuel, feed and packaging costs.

The chinese own all of the major pork producers in this country. Regulations are aimed at them-not small local producers. But yes, California is forcing its will on everyone in the food industry.

I see what you did there.

Reading this thread from Canada, I'm surprised that something is cheaper in Canada for once. I just paid the equivalent of $2.20 USD for eggs today.

Turns out that eggs don't sell at $8/dozen. After a month on the shelf only 2 choices mark them down, or throw them out expired.

Wow, what region? Here in PA, eggs were around $1/doz at Aldi prior to the pandemic, and around $1.50 last year.

Who would've thought we'd be rushing to Whole Foods for the best price on something? What alternate world are we living in?
I was wondering what this world was coming to when I started hearing people everywhere discussing the price of eggs, but you're right, Whole Foods having the lowest price on something is even stranger.

Didn't dollar stores have eggs not that long ago? Certainly not now. And Dollar Tree, er Dollar Tree Plus now, is getting rid of bread in all but select test markets in a few weeks. This seems weird since urban Dollar Trees tend to sell a large amount of bread (suburban stores much less), and dollar stores have little competition from supermarkets in so many urban areas these days.

Meat has skyrocketed since COVID started, too. I guess not at the same rate as eggs, but it's still a lot more expensive than it was just three years ago.

I heard someone saying today that he's not surprised, because eggs were an incredible value. He's kind of right - when they were $1.89 a dozen, you got a ton of calories and nutrition for your money. Not saying the current prices aren't excessive, but eggs have always been a hugely important staple for people of all income levels, and something that basic doubling or tripling in price can put a strain on low-income and fixed-income folks. These increases aren't enough to impact me in any meaningful way but it's no longer a guarantee that we'll have eggs in the fridge at all times.

Good timing, was holding off on big purchases like eggs while my mortgage application is finalizing.
