Be forewarned, MSR's customer service totally sucks. Had an issue with their snowshoes breaking on me on the trail and left me stranded miles from a trailhead. They were aware of what I think was a design/material flaw and wouldn't send replacement parts for a reasonable cost. I see some similar comments about these tent poles breaking and similar response given to customers. Outdoor equipment companies frequently go above and beyond on customer service. MSR does not. They make some decent gear. You are just on your own if you have issues with it.
This is not a hiking tent. This is a car camping tent.

Looks like a pretty good and sturdy car camping tent that'd last for years but not something you'd want to carry on your back for miles.
Is this good if I become homeless due to rising rent?

The 4 person is a 12lb tent which may be too heavy for some but is in an acceptable range for casual backpacking. Could definitely go lighter, still a good buy if weight isn't a concern.
12lbs is insanely heavy for "casual" backpacking for a 4p tent

This tent looks very similar to REI Base Camp 6 tent. I got the base camp 6 for under $400 but I would go for this tent in a heartbeat if it was available for this price when I was buying my tent. Good brand, good tent, insanely good price.

MSR is a great brand; however keep in mind these tents weight 12+ lbs each and this isn't appropriate for backpacking. TRUST ME. You can find lighter 4-season tents.

Ya no, respectfully disagree. Even ignoring the ultralight crowd, this is very very heavy. If there was a way to split it semi-evenly across 3-4 people then maybe. You'd probably also struggle a lot to even fit the tent into a backpack, and carrying 12 lbs by hand up a mountain is not going to be a good time.
For reference, I have an ultralight tent (not really an ultralight backpacker though) that weighs about 1.25 lbs (plus hiking poles as structure).

This is an outstanding tent. I can stand in it without ducking and I'm 6'2". It stands up to high winds and hard rain at high altitude with no issues. It is heavy and car camping oriented, but I've carried it solo and split it amongst a few folks without trouble. I'm used to carrying 65lbs+ with my kids anyway. This price is wicked good.

Get yourself a cheap, big Ozark Trail or similar budget tent for playing (though it's not really a sunroom -- it will get dirty, and if it's at all hot or humid the tent will be hot and humid), and get something else for camping.
Brought back fond memories. We used to camp all months as a troop. One time we ends up on a powered site in state park. One of the parent brought a tent with a pet door. He also had a boat. He brought the portable AC from boat, stick that into the pet door, and run it all night in a hot and humid day.
I couldn't tell you how envious I was about that setup.

Weight is always a concern when backpacking.

Do you know of any tent companies with great customer service and lifetime warranties? I was going to buy this because of the lifetime warranty until I read your comment

A big con for this tent is that there is very little ventilation when using the rainfly. If you camp in cooler climates, no problem. I have the Wawona 6 and I'm tempted to get a tent with a smaller footprint but I will pass on this one. Have my eye on the Aurora 6.

If you want a lightweight backpacking 4-person tent, I've been using the Klymit Maxfield 4. It's semi-freestanding, 2 vestibules and sub-6lbs. It's tight for 4 but manageable for 2 adults and 2 kids OR 3 adults.

Most backpacking tent companies have strong customer service. Personally, I bought an MSR tent about 5-6 years ago at an REI garage sale with a broken pole. I called MSR to buy a replacement pole section and they sent me two of them for free, no questions asked. Maybe they've cut back in this area, but they make great product and I wouldn't take one person's experience as gospel.

Aside from MSR, a couple of my other favorite tent companies with good customer service and warranty are Big Agnes and Nemo.

I honestly wouldn't let the comment change my mind.

We don't really know what caused the breakage.

Note the "what I think" and "reasonable". These are opinions.

I'd say do your own research, and not base decisions on ONE comment.

a guy we went camping with bought some crazy ass family size tent that had 2 little rooms. to start off he didn't know how to set it up and later couldn't figure out how to get it back in the bag LOL. we warned him not to buy a giant tent but he didn't listen.

i have no idea what he did with the tent, he tried selling it for half of what he bought it but no one wanted it.
I am not that guy but I did recently buy a giant Ozark Trail 12 person tent for $125.

Good news is it is returnable. I am pretty new to camping, would I be better off with this four person tent? I am thinking MSR is better quality
