Don't extend the sub if it's expiring soon. You can do the Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Ultimate conversion again.

Buy XBL Gold codes wherever you prefer, redeem them, then sign up for GPU again. Even at regular price for XBL Gold ($60 for 1 year), it's much cheaper to convert than to extend GPU. And if you willing to deal with some hassles, 1 year XBL Gold codes are as low as $30.

Ok but I can just sign up for one month of GPU through the Xbox site after I load my Gold Live sub and it should convert though correct?

I just did this today. My GPU expired yesterday. I bought the eneba deal from last November to buy 9 X 3-month gold pass at around $5 each for a total of 27 months, redeemed each of them with recurring billing turned on and then off for that extra month during each redemption (so you get 36 months), and then converted all the Gold at the end to Ultimate for $3 (from eneba as well). Total cost was around $63 for 3 years of Game Pass Ultimate.
