Actually the Coinbase earn is treated as income if you are in the United States. Feel free to verify this in your account under assets and search for the earned coins and see it is listed as taxable income. The $1 (x3) that you get then becomes your cost basis to use when you decide to sell for either a long term or short term gain/loss.
Edit:
Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. So, if I sell at a loss I am not taxed at the full amount which is what the other poster was claiming.

That is what I said. Selling it is a taxable event.

Is the statement I was responding to. This implies that if the asset become worthless($0) I would still owe tax on $3. That is false. Feel free to go back and reread the thread.

Even if you don't sell, your crypto earned has to be reported in the same year you earned it. Though tbh I haven't seen irs come after taxes on $3. Keep in mind when you do your taxes, there is that incriminating statement of you receiving or selling crypto in the tax year and if you don't answer correctly, that is considered a false statement so proceed cautiously. You don't know about the penalties of these questions which serve as a catch-all

So, if I received $3 in crypto this year it would be reported as income. If I sold it in the same year for $2 I could claim $1 in capital losses. Is this correct? Thanks.

This is what it looks like on the Coinbase summary listing Misc Income and Realized Loss.

I love this site. Where else can you find great deals on shampoo, dryer sheets, Worcestershire sauce, video games, dog toys, light bulbs AND get tax advice
