I returned from a Royal Caribbean cruise just yesterday. We booked it after having a great cruise last November. They must have made some policy changes after the new year because it was not enjoyable at all.

The menu has changed with far less options, and the food went from amazing in November to just okay. They are REALLY pushing the paid dining options, and I think a strategy is to make the free main dining experience less appealing.

There are generally three people who help you with your cruise: a main server, an assistant server, and a room attendant. In the past they have been fantastic. I am wondering if Royal issued a pay cut to employees because all the workers seemed just plain sad, and the service was pretty bad. Moving around the ship, the morale of the crew seemed really somber, too. Not the typical smiles and greetings, and some crew would even mutter stuff under their breath as we passed by. Several times I heard crew making fun of or hating on "Americans".

The cruise was also woefully crowded. Not a seat to spare, and despite there being signage to not save seats or deck chairs, everybody still did it without so much as a prompt from the crew. It was impossible to sit anywhere but your room, and lines for anything were unbelievably long. That's typical on a cruise, but this one was over the top.

Two other things... the ship constantly smelled like weed. There are smoking sections, but nobody cared to follow that rule, so every inch smelled like nasty, skunky weed.

Then at night, 12 am to 3 am, somebody in a nearby stateroom was blasting loud music. After complaints from several nearby staterooms, the crew did nothing to stop it or help.

I used to love cruises... now I don't think I'll go on one again.

Another cruise question, any of you done a repositioning cruise? What was your experience? Thanks
I did from Rome to Fort Lauderdale. Excellent way to see a num ber of ports and still have 6=7 days to enjoy the ship. Prices are the best!

Yeah, my daughter caught it, then I caught it, then the rest of the family caught it. Non stop diarrhea (like 5~8 times bathroom just liquid squeeze) for about a week. I thought... this is how I die. Then I got better after about a week. Took some pepto about 3rd day in, didn't do anything. Just gotta get through it I guess.
I got it on my last cruise also. Was nasty sick for 2 days, then recovered enough to enjoy the rest of the voyage. Its Mideval times when you go "below" deck to see the doctor on a ship. NEVER get hurt/sick on a cruise! No desire to go on another after that experience. Being sick on a moving boat is NOT cool!

Royal Caribbean is the best cruise company. Their quality of service and food is amazing. I have cruised multiple times with RCL and I would strongly recommend RCL.

I just got back from a Royal Caribbean cruise yesterday as well and mostly got on this deal to comment about my experience. It was very similar to yours, in fact I wonder if we were on the same cruise (Symphony of the Seas). I have never been on a Royal Caribbean cruise before this one, but I had wondered if their service/quality had worsened because I had heard a lot of positive things previously but found that it was a bit of a disappointment. I have only been on two cruises before (both with Carnival) and the service and quality of food was MUCH better.

I genuinely felt like I became friends with several staff on both Carnival cruises, on this cruise I felt like a burden to the staff or the staff just seemed sad to be there.

The food was really where I feel like I wouldn't do a RC cruise again. On our Carnival cruise I looked forward to eating better food than I typically get to eat, on this cruise I rarely felt that the food I was given was better than food I would typically just make at home, and in many instances was much worse.

What ship? How long? We just got back from Oasis and main dining was outstanding and so was the service. The ship was about full capacity and we never felt overly crowded. This was our 6th cruise with Royal and probably our favorite experience so far with main dining. We go every night as well except for maybe one. Sorry you didn't have a great cruise. Yours may have been a one off.

Symphony is trying some new test runs on their ships. I have heard the changes in Main Dining are not so great. We just got back from Oasis (Same ship class) and had a wonderful time. Service and food were awesome. I lot has changed since pre covid.

Not all ships are created equal. One ship from the same Royal Caribbean line may not be the same as other ships. Hopefully what you say about RC is not true that they try to cheap out and change the experience and service level they normally provide with all of their cruises. There are reviews of each ship on cruise website like cruisecritic, and some ships in the fleet are not as good if you look it up.

There are also a lot of competition and cruise goers do expect certain level of experience from RC. I can only imagine RC would do this at their own perils.
Agreed, ships matter. What ship was the bad experience on?

Sounds like carnival cruise. That's for the review I'm done with RC based on this nothing worst than a bad cruise. Did you tip well? I wouldn't have if that is the case.

Alaska sounds wonderful until you actually go and realize it's a desperately poor almost third world crime ridden place that you never want to stray from the tourist areas. Most people don't go back. If anyone takes this deal my strong advice is never leave the boat.
Lol. I live in AK and been to most if not all the cruise ports. None of them are poor or high crime.

There are parts of AK that are very poor (mostly small, isolated native communities that don't have running water) and have high violent crime rates but it's not crime against tourists, it's like DV, people getting drunk and fightin, stuff like that. The cruises don't go to these communities.

No! Sorry to hear of the awful trip. I just went on RC 7-night (Jan 2023) and it was amazing (previous RC trip Jan 2020). Service, food, and entertainment was all amazing and better than 2020. I hope they can work out the issues on future cruises for you (and the rest of us)
