Vietnam is my top country on my bucket list. Went once and love it there. Great food, cheap, and friendly folks. Lots of attractions and it's safe to go anywhere alone....minus the traffic

I'm holding out hope there will be a sub $500-550 flight from LAX to Saigon this year.

I was gonna ask that question. Isn't August-September the monsoon or typoon season?

Vietnam is the one country I would like to visit in Asia. Love their food.

I agreed that Vietnam has awesome food and cheap. Friendly folks depend on who you are. White folks = roll out the red carpet. Vietnamese America = better tips me, or I'm going through your luggage. Those ahole at the airport always gave my dad a hard time when he visited. They remembered which side he fought for. My dad always said I'll go back to visit my siblings but will never move back unless the commie leave the country.

It's back as pre-pandemic period. Be careful with the custom border people asking for "Tips" tho lol. https://theindependent.sg/singapo...migration/
Had the customs guy ask me for money. I said I didn't have any. He just sighed.

But in the end the Commie bastards at the X-Ray took about $200 from me in a rehearsed extortion. Too long of a story to go into it.

It is a tropical country so it is not getting any cooler than that my friend.

I don't get how this post turned into a history debate but August until November will be hot and rainy in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City (think Houston summer, but the rain and flooding won't be as severe). January-March will be the nicest months in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City, maybe mid December as well. Ha Noi on the other hand, will have pretty nice and cool weather during those months. Also, just my personal opinion, but Ho Chi Minh City seems like a cookie cutter metro city. It's about a day of driving from very nice beaches, but that's about it. Food is still great though, and average hotels will probably cost you roughly $40/day. Ha Noi and the vicinity will have more tourist destinations imo.

Heard about the tipping tradition at the Vietnam airport custom check. I personally experienced it when I went to VN 6 years ago. Based on my observation, they only target the Vietnamese folks.

They let my wife through without any question even though we walked out together (she is not Vietnamese). The agent kept me at his counter for over 5 minutes. He kept speaking to me in Vietnamese when he saw I was born in VN. I responded in English pretending I don't speak VN. He was frustrated but gave up and let me through at the end laugh out loud.

While waiting for my luggage, I also saw the same phenomenon with the luggage inspection agent. He ignored all the Westerners but stopped the Vietnamese passengers for "tips". This had become an written rule for the Vietnamese travelers that they called "Viet Kieu". Personally, I would not condone this kind of "tradition" but I might not have faced a situation where I may have to give in to avoid trouble during my trip.

Does any know how long this type of deal usually last or how often they have it? I am thinking of a 3+ weeks trip maybe including Thailand but need time to plan it out. TIA

That's the recurring theme amongst Chinese as well except there was already a huge oversea community before the civil war and the civil war ended 30 years earlier than Vietnam's. Those antagonism will fade eventually
