I kept going back and forth between the Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha for a new receiver and so I did a ton of research. The Onkyo 6050, the Denon 760h and Yamaha TSR-700(the Costco trinity) all have some variety of HDMI board issues, that were corrected to varying degrees of success with later hardware and/or firmware updates, so as part of that process, I talked to a local hifi store owner about higher end models that might not have those issues. I brought up the Onkyo RZ50 and he put it like this, "Onkyo is now owned by Sharp. In 35 years of selling hifi equipment I have never known Sharp to make a high quality product." That stopped me from considering the TX-RZ50.

Of the Costco trinity, consensus was that the Denon worked the best, but sounded the worst. The Yamaha sounded the best, but people still could never get it to work with HDMI for 4k/120hz or VRR. The Onkyo has the prettiest menus, was the easiest to setup, and has the nicest features(2x hdmi out). The Onkyo sounded slightly better than the Denon, but still noticeably worse than the Yamaha, and was the least reliable. I like products that work and are reliable, so I landed on Denon.

Is this worth twice the price of the Yamaha RX-V385 5.1-Channel Surround Sound 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver w/ Bluetooth that's at Best Buy right now for $200?

https://slickdeals.net/f/16398097-yamaha-rx-v385bl-5-1-channel-surround-sound-4k-ultra-hd-av-receiver-w-bluetooth-200-free-shipping

edit: I would only be connecting a 5.1 system to it at this point in time since my living space is pretty small. I assume I should save that extra $200 and go with the Yamaha?

I've had both happen to me in the past. What I did once on a different deal was bought the new one and then left/got back in the return line and said it was the old one - that way you're not having to repack/return an opened item that they're now stuck with.

Doesn't matter in this moment, but this was on clearance in store at Costco for $220 a couple months ago. I bought it then and really like it.

I love the Denon. Tried the Yamaha rxv385, but the subwoofer doesn't work with the same cable. Also I didn't figure out how to get the RAC on my tv working with the Yamaha receiver (audio from tv to receiver). I know it's my fault.

Do you know (and I assume it does) if this has a stereo mode for playing music in a "stereo" mode through the front and rears? I had another soundbar (a high-end one) and when playing it either would only play music through the front left/right or if you wanted it through the rear satellites it would try to "surround sound" it which was it's attempt to grab just the background music but not the vocals so of course it sounded bad.

If you are not worried about getting Dolby Atmos, then I think you can go with Yamaha. Also Yamaha is the better deal for $200.
Denon will be future proof for a while with Atmos and Video capability if you pass thru (Google tv dongle, Roku, game console)

Audio output: regular stereo (can do 2ch only or 2ch+sub), next is all channel stereo (it'll play thru all of your speakers)

this can do the same as your sound bar in any surround sound mode where vocals are prioritized at front channel (2 or 3 including center)

Thank you - is it fine to only connect a 5.1 speaker set to this until a future date if I ever want to add two more speakers?

That wouldn't be a problem at all.
2 LR only
2+sub
3+sub
5.1
Then max of 5.2.2
5=L+R+C+SL+SR
.2= 2 SUBS
.2= 2 Atmos

There is a DSP option for Multi Channel Stereo [denon.com] and it works very well when I had this receiver. I ended up switching to Costco's Onkyo receiver instead for more power and better handshaking of HDMI CEC protocol, but otherwise this receiver is a solid unit.

Not sure if I can answer your question. I have 5.1 speakers connected to the Denon. The Denon receiver has several sound modes (9) and one is "multi-channel stereo" I used all the time. In that mode and when I play this test video(https://youtu.be/_TX--Fku9NQ) , both front and surround speakers make noise when video shows playing front L or R; only surrounding speaker makes noise when video shows playing surroundings.

If you need 4k 120hz then Denon. If you only need 5.1 then Yamaha. Performance on all the receivers is pretty good. I always say get the cheapest one (name brand) with the features you need.
