I kept going back and forth between the Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha for a new receiver and so I did a ton of research. The Onkyo 6050, the Denon 760h and Yamaha TSR-700(the Costco trinity) all have some variety of HDMI board issues, that were corrected to varying degrees of success with later hardware and/or firmware updates, so as part of that process, I talked to a local hifi store owner about higher end models that might not have those issues. I brought up the Onkyo RZ50 and he put it like this, "Onkyo is now owned by Sharp. In 35 years of selling hifi equipment I have never known Sharp to make a high quality product." That stopped me from considering the TX-RZ50.

Of the Costco trinity, consensus was that the Denon worked the best, but sounded the worst. The Yamaha sounded the best, but people still could never get it to work with HDMI for 4k/120hz or VRR. The Onkyo has the prettiest menus, was the easiest to setup, and has the nicest features(2x hdmi out). The Onkyo sounded slightly better than the Denon, but still noticeably worse than the Yamaha, and was the least reliable. I like products that work and are reliable, so I landed on Denon.

Is this worth twice the price of the Yamaha RX-V385 5.1-Channel Surround Sound 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver w/ Bluetooth that's at Best Buy right now for $200?

https://slickdeals.net/f/16398097-yamaha-rx-v385bl-5-1-channel-surround-sound-4k-ultra-hd-av-receiver-w-bluetooth-200-free-shipping

edit: I would only be connecting a 5.1 system to it at this point in time since my living space is pretty small. I assume I should save that extra $200 and go with the Yamaha?

I've had both happen to me in the past. What I did once on a different deal was bought the new one and then left/got back in the return line and said it was the old one - that way you're not having to repack/return an opened item that they're now stuck with.

Seems like it goes back and forth between the Onkyo and this being on sale. Anyone have a preference?

On paper Onkyo looks good. I got it to replace a older Onkyo and the new one is not really good. The sound is muffled. Have played around with cut off frequency's but it doesn't sound right. Have ordered this to check. Will return on of them.

I got this at Costco a couple years ago as a TV unit for $359 and am really happy with it. It currently drives 2 Klipsch Forte II fronts, a Klipsch center, 2 Polk Monitor 40 rears, and 2 Polk Monitor 20 Atmos uppers. Sound is good enough for me for home theater, and I am into audio.

I really like the Denon Heos software environment and also have a Denon soundbar for a different TV and also 2 Denon Heos Links that feed my two Class A/B amps that drive bigass (TM) speakers. Originally I used hacked Raspberry Pi approaches to get networked whole-home audio but moved to Heos for a better overall software experience. Heos handles Amazon Music at high bitrate (what I use) along with the major other online providers. The Heos multiroom control is excellent in my opinion. From the phone app you can control speaker selections and input/output selections on all devices.

In brief, I went with Denon for the Heos. I use it all the time whole-house multiroom with 4 nodes, and find the software to work well and not be frustrating. I have never heard an audio lag between the various nodes, temporal synchronization between nodes has always been perfect.

I have an oddly shaped living room where the Denon S760H is and I am quite happy with it. My primary purpose of going with Denon was the Multieq XT32. I run Audyssey using the app and the difference it makes to room correction etc is quite phenomenal. HeOS was the second reason .

Also to people commenting on getting the receiver for $250 or lower. That was a ymmv deal. I tried in 4 different costco when the thread was active and I had no luck.

How does this compare to the Onkyo NR-676? Trying to figure out if I should upgrade.

Heads up that this receiver does NOT have Audyssey MultEQ XT32. Per the Denon website it has MultEQ, two tiers below XT32.

Any thoughts on this Onkyo?

And Amazon has the Denon refurbished for $369.99 currently.

I bought this at Costco when it was this price the last time, with costco credits ended up being $250
I bought this over the Yamaha for the Atmos, better comparison reviews, and the 8K for futureproofing
I cant complain, its been solid, the 2016 4K Samsung TV its attached to has created issues of not getting the most out of it but that's why I bought this to get the most out of it when I upgrade the TV

The receiver, like probably 99.999% of all receivers sold in the last 30 years claim to be transparent. This means they do not produce a sound of their own, rather they reproduce the sound they are receiving with no added coloration. If it sounds muffled to you, it is something else or your imagination, unless there is something wrong with it.

Does this model suffer from the 4k/120 passthru issue that the 960h suffers from. The 760h isnt listed, but I find it odd the lower lens model doesn't suffer the same issue.

https://support.denon.com/app/ans...lity-issue

Edit: it does not

Thanks! You saved my post.
I was pulling my hair on Onkyo as the rsl sub wasnt thumbing and the sorround wasnt sound loud unless I increase volume to 60+.
I will order this and test.

I waited for onkyo to go on sale but it seems I got to buy Denon to compare. Just pita on losing citi additional warranty on this.

Do you need 12 or 14 guage? My amazon basics 16g max cable was 27ft length.

Also at random times, when switching to avr hdmi for sound options, the tv flickers. Swich off and on entire setup to make it go away.

I always buy Onkyo because it works as a free space heater as well as it's secondary purpose which is an AVR.

The only thing that seems better about the Denon is it being Denon (some people claim Onkyo has problems). Personally I got the Onkyo AVR because it has 2 HDMI outs, more features, 15+ more watts per channel and a much, much better menu interface to navigate setup

I run a TX-NR676 in one of my systems. Only reason to pickup a newer receiver would be for HDMI 2.1 if you have a need for it.
