I kept going back and forth between the Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha for a new receiver and so I did a ton of research. The Onkyo 6050, the Denon 760h and Yamaha TSR-700(the Costco trinity) all have some variety of HDMI board issues, that were corrected to varying degrees of success with later hardware and/or firmware updates, so as part of that process, I talked to a local hifi store owner about higher end models that might not have those issues. I brought up the Onkyo RZ50 and he put it like this, "Onkyo is now owned by Sharp. In 35 years of selling hifi equipment I have never known Sharp to make a high quality product." That stopped me from considering the TX-RZ50.

Of the Costco trinity, consensus was that the Denon worked the best, but sounded the worst. The Yamaha sounded the best, but people still could never get it to work with HDMI for 4k/120hz or VRR. The Onkyo has the prettiest menus, was the easiest to setup, and has the nicest features(2x hdmi out). The Onkyo sounded slightly better than the Denon, but still noticeably worse than the Yamaha, and was the least reliable. I like products that work and are reliable, so I landed on Denon.

edit: I would only be connecting a 5.1 system to it at this point in time since my living space is pretty small. I assume I should save that extra $200 and go with the Yamaha?

I've had both happen to me in the past. What I did once on a different deal was bought the new one and then left/got back in the return line and said it was the old one - that way you're not having to repack/return an opened item that they're now stuck with.

I respect that for sure. I ended up going with the x3700h, because I wanted better room correction, more power, and a couple other features like pre-outs the Costco ones just didn't offer. I wanted to want the rz50--especially for Dirac--but I just couldn't get my head around the unreliability. I had another Onkyo fail due to hdmi board issues and so I was on the fence anyways.

I got the Yamaha RX-V385 $200 from Bestbuy and hooked up old speakers/sub for garage usage. So far so good. Everything works without a hitch. HDMI pass-through, Bluetooth, etc.

I have the Onkyo NR656 and the volume regularly drops out if you pause while streaming on the fire cube. I have to change the receiver to a different input and then change it back to the original input and it works again. That or power cycle it.

Is this a common issue with receivers? Is there a fix? I'm tired of dealing with the issue so I'm looking for a new receiver I won't have to worry about that with.

I've had this for about 4 months now and I've had no issues at all. Integrates with my tv, roku and network seamlessly. If your truly worried about hi end sound you wouldn't be buying a 300-400 receiver. I would say your speakers are likely more important in that aspect. And don't be fooled by these "it was $250 a few months ago" that was at select clubs and being in the Chicago area there were none at my 18 or so surrounding clubs. If your going from a sound bar this will be a HUGE improvement. I would also add if you can afford 7.2 do it because at some point you'll want to add on. The app is a nice addition for those who find the menu a bit clunky. I'm running paradigm monitor fronts, and paradigm dipoles for rear, Yamaha center and m&k sub. It is literally house shaking and sounds superb. Also there is still a "Holiday22" code out there to get $45 back on a new membership.

Looking at the reviews, specs, and comments on different sites for weeks before deciding to purchase and my conclusion was for the under $600 range with 7.2 channels the TX-NR6050 was the best choice. If the newer Denon AVR-S970H model was on sale for $600 or less I would have been willing to go outside my budget for that model, but all retailers are currently selling it at MSRP $750 or there abouts. In my opinion the Denon AVR-S970H is the comparable model to the Onkyo TX-NR6050, and the Denon AVR-S760H is a step down.

I bought the Onkyo NR6050 from Costco end of last year and just had to return it. It was not powering speakers after waking up from standby, there was no audio at startup. I had to unplug and hard reset to get it to play between usages. Also the volume OSD would show zzzzzz and the volume level. She had to go back way too annoying and unacceptable. My NR609 shit the bed after a decade or so and I'm heartbroken. Just ordered this Denon to fill the void. Will see.
