I kept going back and forth between the Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha for a new receiver and so I did a ton of research. The Onkyo 6050, the Denon 760h and Yamaha TSR-700(the Costco trinity) all have some variety of HDMI board issues, that were corrected to varying degrees of success with later hardware and/or firmware updates, so as part of that process, I talked to a local hifi store owner about higher end models that might not have those issues. I brought up the Onkyo RZ50 and he put it like this, "Onkyo is now owned by Sharp. In 35 years of selling hifi equipment I have never known Sharp to make a high quality product." That stopped me from considering the TX-RZ50.

Of the Costco trinity, consensus was that the Denon worked the best, but sounded the worst. The Yamaha sounded the best, but people still could never get it to work with HDMI for 4k/120hz or VRR. The Onkyo has the prettiest menus, was the easiest to setup, and has the nicest features(2x hdmi out). The Onkyo sounded slightly better than the Denon, but still noticeably worse than the Yamaha, and was the least reliable. I like products that work and are reliable, so I landed on Denon.

edit: I would only be connecting a 5.1 system to it at this point in time since my living space is pretty small. I assume I should save that extra $200 and go with the Yamaha?

I've had both happen to me in the past. What I did once on a different deal was bought the new one and then left/got back in the return line and said it was the old one - that way you're not having to repack/return an opened item that they're now stuck with.

Agreed. I went into Costco before the holidays prepared to buy this for $400 and found it on clearance for $250, so I was pleasantly surprised. A couple days later the last Denon was gone, and there were comparable Onkyo units on the shelf for $500. Sometimes stores clear out old inventory to make room for new products, but it's just luck of the draw.

My Denon is driving a mismatched 3.1 setup that I put together off Craigslist & OfferUp and I absolutely love it - I have a Speedwoofer, Emotiva Center, and a pair of Paradigm towers that sound better than I would have expected for the budget. I haven't even calibrated it yet, and I'm really impressed with the clarity & quality - voices aren't getting drowned out (like my sound bar used to do) and movies & music both sound incredibly vivid.

The HDMI 2.1 passthrough support works great with my PC and PS5 on the LG C2. This is a great option if you're looking for an entry level receiver that supports HDMI 2.1 for 120Hz refresh rate at 4k resolution.

Hi, I have a 5.1 system and currently have an avr1713. When I try to stream only on disney + and peacock, my sound is garbled and I need to switch to TV speakers. Is this a good upgrade?

X1700H is basically the same receiver great deal at 400, wish I was lucky enough to get it for 250 but still at 400 amazing cheaper than others

I connect my series x staright to the TV then earc back to the receiver. I wouldn't recommend connect any console directly to the receiver. It adds latency.
