It's the same with espresso machines. European brands are being sold in the US for usually 50-100% more than in Europe - and prices in Europe already include sales tax…
Also, do you think you would notice the difference between beans that were packaged last week vs beans that were packaged last year. I personally would not notice the difference.
I buy my coffee when I go on vacation. Right now I am sitting on 20lbs of beans from Costa Rica. And before I had about 30lbs of beans from Honduras. I can tell you that the first cup that I had tasted just as good as my last cup (two years later).

As I said, it is rare to find a deal on this brand. Whether or not you find this brand a good value for you is completely irrelevant. I like this brand of coffee enough to set a deal alert for it.

Am I the only one who is in sticker shock?

Well, for espresso I usually try to use as fresh as possible so it makes good crema for lattes. Also, $12/pound is definitely not expensive. Lately, I've been buying $17-$18 for 12oz from local coffee shops/roasters. I'm afraid it's the new normal.

If by Europe you primarily mean UK tea is more popula therer so less demand for coffee and lower prices.
