Feline nutrition - feed cats like cats Facebook group lists the chicken and turkey flavor on their recommended food lists. Some of their criteria is high protein that is meat based, low carbs, no fish, no fruits/veggies. They have other criteria, so feel free to check them out for those who are interested.

And fyi, on thecatfooddb turkey and chicken formulas are both 4/5 ingredients and 3/5 nutrition.

Also remember, any wet food is better than dry food.

Why is any wet food better than any dry food? A lot of the cheaper wet foods (9 Lives for instance) are less than 10% protein. How could that be good?

Cats have a strong tendency of getting urinary crystals, which is fatal if not surgically treated quickly. The extra moisture in the wet food helps keep the cat hydrated, which lessens the possibility of crystals.

Thanks OP! These large cans are great since I have 3 cats. The Maine Coon kitten eats like a teenage boy. 🤣

Even the above-average stuff, like turkey, contains guar gum that can cause problems with some cats. Carrageenan in the giblets version is a carcinogen.

Chicken is the best choice of these, but does include guar gum. It's easy to find better choices for around the same price or better.

Please do post links of better choices for the same or cheaper per ounce. and I do mean links bc last time I asked for food you recommended the food was discontinued. ☺️

So what food do you recommend that is 55 cents or cheaper per 3 ounce?

Our two cats seem to drink a good amount of water. Is that generally enough for them to not need a wet food?

Wait for deals. The chicken is very good as long as your cat can tolerate guar gum, but I would not use this as a staple food.

Chewy / Petco online often have huge discounts for NEW customers on good food, but you can be a "new" customer multiple times with new accounts. You just missed a huge Instinct clearance at Petco B&M.

"seem to."

With all things being equal like nutrition and ingredients, wet is always better than kibble.

Yeah you are falling for marketing of no gum and grain free. Its in minimal quantities and keeps the food stable.
Dry food has worse ingredients.
Some cats might be allergic to different stuff, so avoid that particular ingredient in that case. Most cats don't have issues and even then you can rotate these brands.

Only freeze dried and homemade food is better and that's a whole different ball game in terms of money/convenience and expertise.

Not marketing. It is known as "science." http://catcentric.org/nutrition-a.../guar-gum/

Yeah read your link at the end it says -
"For healthy cats, it may not be a problem per se. But if your cat is experiencing any GI problems, you can't identify a protein culprit and you've already eliminated grains, legume proteins and starches, carrageenan and xanthan gum, consider a short-term trial of plain, home-cooked food to see if the elimination of guar gum improves your cat's symptoms."

Its not optimal for digestion of fat and protien so most cats have to eat more. There is no study on cats for Guar gum to cause cancer and the author is extrapolating from a rat study to make their point.
Again if that is the level of one's concern i'd consult a certified vet nutritionist and follow their advise for your cat and not give blanket advise without similarly priced alternatives.

I would avoid any pet food with strong focus on "natural" or "healthy" or "organic" etc in it's product labeling. None of it actually means it is better for your pet than another food.
