8K 65" Roku TV by TCL, 7680 x 4320 Resolution, Model 65R648

For smaller TV rooms or in use replacing a triple or quad 4K monitor setup, it's a solid value late 2021 Roku 8K TV for the money in Early 2023 at a time where Hisense and TCL did not announce newer/replacement 8K models at CES 2023, and at a time where it is very difficult to find this model or Hisense 75" Roku 8K TV in stock locally, being mostly on clearance or unavailable.

You may want to protect your investment with an Asurion 4 year warranty for $151.99 considering the limited selection of reasonably priced 8K TV announced at CES 2023.

I already have an OLED display, and wanted an affordable 8K model for under $1300 with available inexpensive 4 year warranty. There are limited availability of these in retail outlets (none by me), and CES 2023 was a disappointment in no affordable 8K models being announced by most manufacturers, if any under $3000.

I don't want to think about OLED burn-in either, so it will be left on all the time for gaming, sports, Family photo slideshows, whatever the content - no concerns.

It's for a "smallish" room and we have over 4 years of family 8K photos and family content from 8K phones, cameras, etc. We want our family content to look it's best in slideshow and not worry about burn-in.

We have a projector in our Family room, so no need for larger size TV than 65" in the small room use case we have.

The display has pixels twice as large as the Dell 32" 8K monitor sold for $5000, yet "mobile" enough to be moved by 1 person, carefully, and likely useful for the next half decade as content becomes more available from our 8K phones, cameras, Youtube and other sources with upscaling available also. If you use a 4K 16" OLED laptop, then in comparison these pixels on this TV are once again twice as big. Nobody would want to buy a 50-65" 1080p TV now, but those were also sold and now look poor with modern content, hence the reason for short-term future-proofing the TV selected in the small room location.

UPDATE 03/20/2023
Returned the TCL due to a few QC issues, and TCL support was very hit or miss- went with 55" Samsung 8K deal at Best Buy for $999.99 instead since much easier to move around- far lighter and has integrated ATSC 3.0 tuner

FYI: Both the 65" TCL and 55" Samsung have significant off-axis color shift, even viewing close up...
To me, the 700B off axis is worse than the Samsung 800B, but I don't have both side-by-side, simply going off Rtings
and having both the TCL and Samsung to compare...

This is reportedly a great TV. I actually own a 4k 65" TCL R6 from a couple years ago, and have no complaints really. I replaced it with a 65" LG C1 OLED. The difference is significant, (OLED is maybe 25% better, but the R6 is no slouch). I still watch the R6 from time to time in the other room where it now lives and I don't feel deprived.

Thing is, for this price you can easily get a 65" LG B2 120Hz OLED (similar performance to C1). Why would you spend more for this set than a quality OLED costs on sale? Yes it's 8k. But there is almost no 8k content anyway, and the TV is barely big enough for it to matter.

Like I said, I'm not knocking the TV, just that it is priced above a couple of somewhat better options of the same size.

Unless you are putting it in your sun room and plan to watch it during the day, just actually SAVE a little money and get an OLED. This TV is overpriced for what it is relative to slightly better options.

PS: I also love the Roku interface. Added a Roku Ultra to my 65" C1 and it still came out cheaper than this.

Update: Had to return first set due to a couple of issues with the TV and YMMV with TCL support- I highly recommend 3rd party warranty.

I reordered thru the Slickdeals "See Deal" link as it goes on/off sale at this $1299.99 price every couple days for the last several weeks.

Some additional comments- if you sit 30%+ off axis you will see off-axis color shift on-par with the Hisense U7G (see Rtings for comparison to other sets) so no OLED off-axis viewing angles.

If you are looking for cheap 4K TV's you could buy three $379 65 inch 4K 60Hz TV right now for the same money or a cheap refurb 4K OLED if you want off-axis viewing angles and contrast ratio (burn in can be an issue), or a QD-OLED if you want "color-pop" - they are all with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Why 8K? I answered the multiple reasons above in my original post but we are on our 4th Generation of Samsung 8K phones with our incoming S23 Ultra and If your personal photos and video are 8K and above you will certainly tell the difference as we do. If you are waiting for other people to make content you enjoy wait longer just as people had to for 4K adoption to take hold. It will also upscale 1080 and 4K, if you have no high resolution sources.

Same logic is why do people buy cars that go over 70mph? Some people like faster cars just like some people like higher resolution screens or higher refresh rates be it 5K 6K 8K 12K or whatever comes next. You don't have to be stuck with 4K anymore or can wait till your ready at a screen size you can afford.

You can also use a 65" 8K monitor to replace multiple 32" 4K monitors with one computer source or consider it a variable resolution 4K to 8K screen where you can have a quarter of the screen as a 32" 4K monitor 1/2 screen as a tall high Resolution Portrait Display, or use more screen real estate all the way up to full screen 8K and any ratio in between.

Happy shopping as we already have an OLED and enjoy the extra resolution 8K and it's resolution flexibility brings to the table.
