Not to thread jack: But Whirlpool no longer put food grinder in their dishwashers. Correct? [My uncle is researching and I was not aware of this.]
If you need a food grinder in a dishwasher you dont need an appliance.... you need a maid.

I paid $500 for this same dishwasher from Costco last year. Now that's a big difference.

Maytag is the only Whirlpool brand to have food grinders currently.

The Whirlpool Gold I bought in 2012 was the first I've owned with a removable filter (and a steel tub) - if there is a grinder, I can't see it having much to do.

I disassembled my mother-in-law's dishwasher many years ago to find the cause of death was plastic straw.

I appreciate the filter since this house has a septic tank. I've replaced miscellaneous interior plastic parts over the more recent years, and the utensil basket has zip ties on it, but this thing has been a workhorse. We don't use heated dry, but do use citric acid for cleaning. The fill hose failed in 2022 - for many people, that would have been a death sentence.

Good deal, these things are disposable nowadays. No need to fork $1k+ for something that will only last a few years...?

This is true, and makes selecting dishwashers challenging. Luckily costco has... at least 1 model that has it.

But I think the main reason so few models have food grinders is Energy Star and Noise rating marketing.

That's LOUD for a dishwasher. It's 2023 and we still have dishwashers putting out 55db. That's crazy.

FYI, if you require the dishwasher to be hard-wired (I.e. you don't have an outlet to plug it into), they will not install it for free.

Hard-wire is not a big deal at all (2 wires and a ground to connect to the dishwasher), but the installers aren't electricians so I guess there is some liability there.

A licensed electrician probably won't hardwire your dishwasher. They'll more likely pull a permit and install an outlet even if your old dishwasher was hardwired.

NEC has an exception permitting hard-wiring for dishwashers specifically labeled as double-insulated, but the default requirement is an outlet and plug. Local code increasingly requires a plug for everything, and home inspectors will flag hardwired appliances regardless of age or code.

Also, you'll need an air gap. If you don't have a punch-out in your sink, they won't install.

Of course, unlicensed handymen will do just about anything.

Your absolutely correct. An electrician would install an outlet and charge you to do that.

My point was that, the install is no longer free if your dishwasher is hardwired. If they show up and see that it doesn't have an outlet than they are just going to leave everything there and you will need to schedule install with an electrician.

Alternatively, you can just install it yourself (hardwire it and hook up water line, etc.).

This is just a PSA to check your current setup before scheduling anything otherwise you may have delays and extra costs associated with the "free delivery and install".
