For an average sized 5 year old, I'd suspect even the 41mm is big. I also remember losing lunchboxes and bookbags at that age, so consider a series 4 from eBay or, if you must buy new, an Apple Watch SE.
All of those watches are fully capable of messaging, tracking, etc. I cannot fathom the value of a series 7 for a 5 year old unless they just need to check EKG frequently
This $329 matches the price Target had on Christmas. If you're gung-ho on the midnight color, this is amongst the lowest a series 7 with cellular has been (and stock is only going down).

Meanwhile my phones have had 0 deep scratches for the last 3 phones I've had.
I recently decided to try the LK film that people seem to recommend. It was surprisingly easy to apply and I don't notice the film. We will see how long it lasts, it came with 6. I usually go without screen protectors but I don't want my watch to scratch any further.
