I picked up 10 bags. There were still another 15-20 bags left, but others took notice of me and I saw them heading over there when I walked away
Home Depot employees can purchase any clearance items as long as they aren't penny items. Reduced tag items must be on the floor a minimum of 24 hrs. before they can be sold to an associate.

BS says the HD near me has them in clearance but when an employee checked using their handheld device it came out to be full price. Any idea why?

Maybe he gave you the HD website online price and bought them for himself?

I actually planted clover, so no go for me. Now if a weedkiller-free version of the fertilizer would also be on such deep discount, I'd be all over it.

No! It's best to apply a selective herbicide when they need to be applied and spot spraying the weeds. This is a broadcast type weed killer and unless your lawn is completely full of the weeds it claims to kill, the herbicide just goes unused and ends up washed into waterways.

Also if you put this down in the fall, you won't be able to overseed. If you put it down in the spring, you are hammering chemical fertilizers into your lawn at a bad time (for us midwesterners). Chemical fertilizers in the spring forces top growth at the expense of root growth. You want root growth to prepare the grass for the hot dry summer months ahead. You want to feed the soil, not the grass.

Basically if this stuff was free, I still wouldn't take it.

I was able to buy 40 for $1. local store had 169 bags. These bags were located above the smaller ~12lb? bags listed for the same price.
Why would you buy 40? If you applied twice per year that means 20 years broadcasting weed killer all over your lawn and unnecessary chemical fertilizers. Not to mention never being able to overseed in those 20 years.

If you have that many weeds in that span of time, it should dawn on you that your approach to lawn care isn't working. The best way to handle weeds is being proactive. That means establishing a healthy full lawn so weeds can't grow. Go get a soil test conducted so you know what "chemicals" your lawn actually needs.

Agreed, but 40 bags is just $40. What can you buy with $40 these days? 10 dozen eggs?

10 Dozen eggs is exponentially better than 40 bags of crap. Smilie

haha, that's true. Maybe he got 20 acres of land who knows? I think it's better to buy more than enough at this price rather than paying the $79 per bag later.
