Would be nice to get a $99 one-way fare from the EAST Coast ...someday. I know that's asking too much, but I can dream! =(

Sounds like you've never been. I've done Bali, French Polynesia, Caribbean, Europe, and still found Maui breathtaking

$99 is so cheap! It would cost a lot more in gas to drive there!
Can't drive from west coast to HI. ;-)

After traveling around the world for nearly a year, hitting 6 of 7 continents, Hawaii is still my favorite place to visit - US law, currency, no passports and the most isolated place on the earth, it's paradise in my opinion.
HI is one of the expensive place to visit.

baffling why anyone would take an 11 hour flight to Hawaii when they could get anywhere in Europe in 7 hours
Might be the dumbest comment on Slickdeals I've ever seen.

...

Congrats?

Because from November-March most of Europe is cold AF. Good luck going to the beach/getting a tan then. And also, 1/2 the country west of Texas has a MUCH shorter non-stop flight. Have flown Hawaiian Airlines for years, one of the best domestic airlines. Take it from someone who came for a temporary job 16+ years ago and stayed permanently. There's no better place in America to surf/beach/relax. Not the cheapest to live or stay, but you get a lot of other priceless free stuff to do here

Looks like it's dead now for San Diego. Cheapest I see is $197 and that's only on a few days.

Flights are cheap, Car rentals and regular hotel lodging are expensive. Food is expensive.
I grew up and lived there and seen people move there only to stay indoors and go shopping and never go to the beach or hike. You can do that a lot cheaper in other places. Hawaii is planning to stop short term rentals (Air BnB) soon so maybe it's a good time to go if you like doing the air BnB thing. My parents tried to go back last year and the only way to make it affordable was to stay with family and borrow a car from them.

If you like doing things outdoors like hiking, golfing, and beach activities then do it. If you want shopping, museum type of things look elsewhere.

As somebody from Hawaii I think New Zealand is actually better. It's just more diverse and way less crowded and cleaner. New Zealand may look expensive but you'll take advantage of the foreign exchange rate and not having to tip when eating out. In Hawaii I'll reach the top of a hike only to have a bunch of visiting nurses smoking cigarettes Frown Think you'll get those pristine photos of waterfalls? It's possible but sometimes bus loads of people are there also. It totally ruins it. Think you can wait out the bus of tourists? Bring mosquito repelleant. Plan ahead and go early cause with deals like this you'll have a full flight and full attractions.

I do suggest Feb-March. It's a lot cooler. After Spring Break it's uncomfortably hot/humid.

Just remember that you are visiting "stolen land" if you encounter any "local hate".

Then again if you are flying out of California you are on land that was "swindled/abandoned" ?

Hawaii? Compared to what? There are differences between leeward and windward sides but I'd NEVER consider Hawaii hot or humid.

When it's hot and humid it's all over! I was primarily in Honolulu and Kaneohe. Like trying to sleep with the fan on all night kind of humid but you are right. It is worse in other US cities like Miami, FL

For a first-time two day trip (that's just how it is this time Smilie but I'm sure I'll be back), would folks recommend Honolulu&Oahu, or Kona&Big Island? I've narrowed it to those two choices.

I think I'd be nibbling and beaching more than surfing and snorkeling. Quite keen on visiting some coffee farms and sampling the joe.
Honolulu&Oahu, way more food options and way more sandy beaches, but way more people.
