Yeah, I used to love Costco and did most of my grocery shopping there, but I very rarely shop there anymore due to the insane price increases. I do the math on some items and it turns out to be no different than buying it full price at Kroger or wherever. I've mostly switched to Sam's and been very happy. Also, what is up with the prime meat shortage at Costco? That was one of my last remaining reasons to go there every week. Zero prime anything at any Costco in my area.

The comments in here are so odd. Went to my local Costco first time in months- all the food prices were down. 2 dozen eggs were high, like $4.00 for 24 eggs, limit 2 but everything else was prepandemic pricing. Maybe it's regional ???

Similar experience here, I used to shop exclusively at Costco. In the past couples of years I have been doing half Costco and half elsewhere due to Costco's price increase. Most of the time, I only get the items that is on sale from Costco, and if they are non perishable, I get lots of them. Looking back, Costco isn't what it used to be when I first joined, but o well. I bet it's those damn investors counting beans and staring at the stock.

EFF the Eggs and their price comparisons. I am not sure why this thread is taken over with egg supply posts.

I was and maybe, perhaps still am a big proponent of Costco. But I joined Sams recently on a deal posted on SD and did some price comparisons. Sams has similar prices or better on some items. I added those to cart but did not buy and do store pickup because the Sams Club is a little further away for us and also its on the side of the town that I generally have no reason to go to.

Thats it about the prices. They are comparable between Sams and Costco, but I am not sure if one has an edge. My beef with Costco is from my last weekends visit. I usually go on weekday evenings because its a madhouse on the weekends. But despite knowing that I did not think it has become even worse. It took me 25 mins to park the car. And after going around the lot I eventually followed a guy who had exited with a full cart. And others cars were following other people who were coming out of Costco. So there was a long line of cars behind the car following whoever was coming out. And then it took me 20+ mins until I reached check-out counter. That is more than 45 mins plus gas wasted, 45 mins that I will never get back. Ohh- and my local Costco had run out of Spring rolls with Edamame which is on sale this week.
I see this all the time but must be YMMV. You must live in some major metropolitan area is all I can think of. Even at its busiest, none of my local Costcos (around 3 within 30 mins) are ever as crazy busy as many people here complain about.

That and I think a good park must be regional- milk at my Costco was $1.89 a gallon- pretty much always has been except during the first year of the pandemic. (It's been as low as $1.39 but that's been quite awhile)

Butter was 4 pounds for $13.59 (that tends to fluctuate between $10 and $15) kind of max you have to get it in quarters only instead of one pound blocks but, so be it- they recently added bread flour which was nice, very cheap, can't recall the brand but it was not pillsbury or Kirkland- maybe King Arthur- much cheaper per pound than Kroger/Meijer etc.

Cheese tend to be similiar prices to the sale prices at Kroger (talking your basics now, cheddar, mozzarella, monterrey Jack etc) obviously the "artisan" cheese are much cheaper.

Meat, shrimp etc, much better quality about 15% cheaper. I tend not to buy the ready made/frozen foods so maybe that's the difference, I don't know.

As for all the people raving about Sams, I have both memberships tho I rarely use the Sams one anymore. In the Midwest they tend to be a bit more expensive than Costco maybe 5%, the stores are very dark and the employees are rude I do like the scan and go and they have a different mix of items and some baked goods that arent bad. I mainly use the membership for online purchases of hard goods.
Sam's is pretty much dead here. I had a membership years ago when we lived about 15 minutes from one which happened to be in the same town my IL's lived so we were there once a week regardless. Then they closed one of the other Sam's, now there are only 2 in the entire state and neither are really all that convenient - one being the same one in the IL's town that's 20 minutes away but I'm hardly ever over there and the other one that's more than 1 hour away.

Meanwhile Costco has been expanding, and BJ's is very prevalent here in the Northeast.

I'd think that logistically Sam's might have the upper hand on Costco because Sam's is part of Walmart = more purchasing power, much better embedded logistics, etc. Too bad they just don't have the store footprint.

Been a member at Costco every year since 1997. The cashback itself is worth it at the end of the year. They have the most generous return policy out of any other retailer. And the ability to save by buying in bulk for a family that eats a lot is a godsend. Sure food inflation is affecting every store but the amount you save going to Costco vs driving around to shoprite, Aldi, Lidl, etc. is worth it.

But does it make sense to do all that running around? Are you really going to make a special stop at a grocery store to buy a gallon of milk a week?
I don't run around. I meticulously plan my shopping. I'm a little over the board when it comes to shopping though. For example, I plan when to shop at which store based on work commute that I'd be doing anyway (I work at multiple locations). I've already memorized which store tends to sell what for cheap, so I have my routine all set up. Obviously, I won't stop at a store for a single item lol...

I wouldn't call it overboard - planning makes a huge difference. I do something similar, but add that I go at super low volume times because it's a colossal time-saving.

People who go out to certain roads here @11am on a Saturday have no clue - even if they don't MIND the traffic and everyone else and waiting in line, it still amounts to an excess of an additional hour or more.

NTM that, with regard to gas, there are those that do no math, those that can do math, and those that don't get "Prius math" --- once you're over 24mpg (loosely, I forget the number) mixed mileage, then savings aren't savings.

Exactly. The cash back pays for my membership, so cost of membership is irrelevant. What's left, of course, are price and value. Costco isn't the cheapest on everything, but it is the cheapest on many things. The customer service is far superior. The stores ("warehouses") are clean. The products are legitimate. The same cannot be said for Aldi's or Amazon, for instance. As I mentioned, cooking oils at Aldi's have tested positive by Berkeley's laboratory for canola oil in their olive and avocado oils. If you're out shopping for those two oils, check the labels. Buy avocado oil from Mexico or US producer, not Spain. Buy olive oil from 100% Italian olives or USA. Do not buy olive oil when the label says, "Made from olives grown in Spain/Tunisia/Italy/Greece/Argentina." Anything oil made from what I call "mutt olives" is garbage. There's high likelihood that oil is substituting canola or an inferior oil when you lack that traceability, which happens when you get olives from multiple countries.

Avocado Oil: Buy Marianne's or Chosen Foods. Both are sold at Costco and Chosen Foods has 100% avocado oil cooking spray. Those oils use avocados without dilution from canola or crappier oils.

Costco does a good job policing this stuff with products they sell, especially under their Kirkland label. I haven't shopped on Amazon for years beyond a random book purchase. Why? Because Amazon co-mingles their inventory with third party resellers. Even if you buy something "Sold by Amazon," chances are it's not. Amazon handles the delivery and customer support, but the product is sitting on a shelf at a warehouse that was mixed in with inventory of third parties OR was never sourced from the manufacturer by Amazon in the first place. Amazon has a massive issue with fake products that I don't think many people have caught onto. Good luck buying batteries, deodorant, cereal, laundry detergent, or dog food on Amazon. Good chance it's inventory from who knows, which is like buying food off Craigslist only Amazon gives you a great no-hassle return policy. But most people buying stuff on Amazon are oblivious they're getting counterfeit products. Unless it's a book or a digital purchase, I steer clear.

Costco I have none of these problems because they have direct relationships with manufacturers. Amazon is now essentially a drop shipping company. You have no idea the product you're getting came from where. "Tide sold by Amazon" is very likely "Counterfeit watered-down detergent sourced by GoodDealz456"

I love Costco!! Iv been going for >5 years now and haven't come across a rude employee one time. The prices are good, stores are clean, and shelves are stocked. I primarily go for everyday household items like bottled water, paper products, and detergent but also find great deals on clothes. Some items are higher in price but great customer service comes with a price.

Sam's has raised prices even higher than Costco, and it sure isn't going to employee pay since they have nearly eliminated human cashiers; there are rarely any carts at the entrance, and there is junk all over the store dumped by customers.

Quite a joke to think regular prices at a grocery store like Kroger is anywhere remotely close to the regular prices at Sam's or Costco when comparing same quantity/weight/volume. I get shocked each time I visit a grocery store - yes even Walmart.

No, prices have not gone back to pre-Covid days.
