It's DIY grade I wouldn't buy this for everyday use. At $180 for a DIYer it's a great deal especially if you've been holding off due to the $300+ average price tag for a planer.

Belt sender might be another option since if you hit any nail heads or screws with planer the blades are toast. Maybe even rental of floor sander from HD would be an option as long as right grit is used.
They offer special paint/coating which if applied on top keeps splinters either covered or from making new ones but for longest maintenance free option new capped composite deck boards with hidden side fasteners are the best looking and longest lasting solution although sadly not the cheap one.

I was really tempted to get this, but after reading reviews I'm not sure this is is good for hardwood and likely a frustrating experience with gears breaking. If anyone has experience this please share.

Had previous model . You get what you paid for -very difficult to adjust. Rolling mechanism works very poorly. Wasted money

I was pretty tempted by this, but the reviews are less than stellar. Decided to buy a $55 electric hand planer instead.

I have a single deck job of 2,100 sqft and need to plane one side I'd the boards to minimize splinters in kids feet. Is this a good fit for the job? Not doing any planing afterwards that I can't do with my handplaner.

It sucks to pay more, but buy the Dewalt.... it occasionally goes on sale for $400. I got thr x35 or whatever the nice one is for $370 a few years ago. Not sure they'd drop it that low now tho

Agreed, but the DeWalt. Sell it afterwards if you have no need. The amount of plastic on this machine is problematic. Making multiple passes isn't the cure for everything. For lunchbox planers you want a lot of cast iron and solid rollers that stay in plane, that's the point. The DeWalt blades are also double sided so a money saver
