Buy a paperwhite, use it until BF, the send them for trade in towards buying newer kindles with BF prices. you will get atleast $20 and a 20 percent off coupon towards purchase of newer kindle then. essentially money makers.
2017 hd10 is almost completely unusable, it's slow has almost no memory and you and anyone you give it to (like your kids) will end up so frustrated with it that you'll daydream about ways to elaborately destroy it

Interested in a simple e-reader device for the kid but not fire device. Are these older models decent or just frustrating from a performance standpoint?

They're fine. I mean, they are greyscale or black/white but you're not watching video on them. It's like a paperback book that takes a second or so to switch the page. You're not going to get some amazingly better experience out of another e-reader. If you want to read PDFs and stuff you're better off with a larger tablet like an ipad pro or one of those larger android tablets.

Obviously every one's experience will be different, but my neice from 9 to 12 read a bunch of books on the regular 8th gen Kindle above, and she was fine with it. I am disappointed in their screen size as an adult, but for Goosebumps books, they're fantastic.

they're totally viable for their intended purpose - I still use a Kindle Keyboard (second gen) from 2009 or whenever it came out.

Watch out! Tried this deal in December 2022 and bought what was advertised as a refurbed Gen 10 Paperwhite. After charging up, battery wouldn't hold charge and machine "about" actually identified a gen 7. Returned.

Would either of these be suitable for light web surfing, checking email etc.. and light gaming? I'm thinking of picking one of as an alternate to taking my laptop along on family vacations.

Can either be jail-broken in order to install regular Android apps?
