Manufacturers like Ford, GM, VW, BMW are going to have much more stable supply chains as many of their parts will be cross-platform. This is why I think Tesla is eventually going to under once the bigger guys ramp up their production.

As with any major change, there will be a group of people that accept it, a group of people that it won't work well for, and a group of people that will focus on the negatives despite the product theoretically working for them.
The ideal electric car owner:
- Drives less than 150 miles a day
- Has a garage
- Has a level 2 charger installed
- Lives in an area with stable temperatures
- Lives in highly populated areas
People that will have issues with electric cars:
- Heavy drivers
- People that have to haul things long distances
- People that have to park in the street or in a parking lot
- People that live in extremely cold areas
- People that live in sparsely populated areas where electric infrastructure isn't available
For the later group, you aren't being forced to buy an electric car- you're just seeing the influence of people buying them because a large portion of the population is in the ideal group. Car manufacturers want to switch to all electric in 12 years or so---enough time to build more infrastructure and address the issues of the "non-ideal" electric car owner.
Electric cars work VERY well for a select group of people, and every owner I know absolutely loves theirs (one lady I know is on her 10th year with her BMW i3 this year). To say they're junk, cause more harm than good, or don't work because they don't work in your situation is blatantly false.
