I've had one for 4-5 yrs and find it's only worth it situationally (as a homeowner). For example, doing a 15' high internal wall saved a lot of time vs going up and down the ladder to load a normal roller. If I'm just doing a normal 8' wall I don't bother with this, though.

But that project with the high walls? The cost of the machine was worth it for that project alone.

Cabinets are far different than walls. I'd spray cabinets. And, certainly would never use a standard roller on cabinets. You're looking for a smooth finish on cabinetry, imho.

I've had one for 4-5 yrs and find it's only worth it situationally (as a homeowner). For example, doing a 15' high internal wall saved a lot of time vs going up and down the ladder to load a normal roller. If I'm just doing a normal 8' wall I don't bother with this, though.

But that project with the high walls? The cost of the machine was worth it for that project alone.

I can't speak to the price point, but have used this multiple times. It's a bit loud, but really cuts down on time and isn't too hard to clean and maintain.

Wouldn't it be better to use sprayer? I understand you can get better results with less paint and faster if you spray

This is a must for large walls, especially large flat areas with no cutting involved. We have windows and openings on every wall in our home and this was of little value to us.
I can see the value for a one time use on a fence or barn

We've got a very large 6' wooden fence with the slats placed maybe 2" apart. I'm trying to figure out the best way to stain it. I'd rather paint since it lasts longer, but the wife wants stain. I have a cheaper sprayer, but I'd think I'd be spraying 25% of the stain through the gaps in the fence, so wondering if something like this would be better.

Can you turn the tip on your sprayer and make vertical passes instead of horizontal? You'll still give away an angel's share of the stain, but could be much less?

That's what I'm thinking, maybe have to go up and down instead of side to side, but man, that's going to be punishing on the back and knees 1 board at a time for like 1/3 acre of fencing.

No, this would suck at staining a fence, use a sprayer. Could you use it? Sure. Would it do a great job? Probably not, you would be hand brushing a lot of wood.

When you say stain, understand that there are oil based stains and water based stains that penetrate wood. Then there is all the other crap that manufacturers call stain, which is actually a film forming substance that sits on the surface. Real stain doesn't peel or crack or flake, that water based film former does. Additionally, if you use some semi transparent film forming stains, they tend to leave lap marks and some run a lot. So with a roller, not knowing your experience level, you could possibly leave visible roller marks all over the fence.

I do little pressure washing and staining decks as my side hustle. Trying to move into the log home market with better margins.

buy a swivel head and get and extension, worth the money. If you are staining, don't be stingy with the stain If it is a good self leveling oil stain, don't worry about runs.

My extension on my sprayer has a swivel I can work from the gun. It is a specific type of swivel head made to rotate from the gun while doing decks and fences.

That's why you use a paint stick. No ladder needed except for doing the edge.
