Is this really 1050 write speed? Even for long/ big data transfers?
Yes, until around 280 GB then it drops considerably to 180MB/s.

Y'all think this is better than the Samsung T7 at Costco? Agree with other comments about the 4TB value.

Please excuse my ignorance on this matter, I've been using external drives (2.5" HDD) for the longest time in backups. It's cheap on a per TB basis, but obviously slow.

Been looking for a portable SSD that I can work off real-time, I occasionally do video editing work and would LOVE to work off such a drive. From my limited research, it seems I should really get something with Thunderbolt 3/4 but was wondering if this drive can handle photo/video editing? I tried looking up this part number online and can't quantify the exact type of storage used, presumably these are NVMe chips?

Thx.
The drive itself is plenty fast. It's the USB 3 interface that's the bottleneck. Thunderbolt would be no problem.

You might want to look at speed for that, these are probably 2x M.2 SATA drives. My PNY is, but in I am guessing a striped mode since it shows a full 1 tb (2x512 sata M.2's) and gets the full 1 GBps from USB 3.2

It actually may be cheaper to get a M.2 nVME drive in the size you want, only need to get a Gen3, and an external NVME enclosure. Those go on sale all the time, I have three, and pop NVME drives in and out as needed.

It wo't be as rugged as this, but will be more flexible if you need to swap out drives.

It is not ideal, but its better than a nas with hdd platter drives and those work fine. this should be even better, especially if you keep if mostly empty which can vastly help performance.

I use portable SSDs for video editing - and I've found that while Crucial brand works okay for that purpose, they are the only brand that I've used where the drive itself gets really hot. Even while not being used, just plugged in. I would recommend Sandisk (Extreme or Extreme PRO) or Samsung SSDs.

Also it's been this price for a number of months, so I'm not sure this is a bargain at this point.

I have the 1tb version. It hits the advertised speeds. I have Windows 11 installed on it with Bootcamp on my 2019 27" iMac. No regrets with it connected via the Thunderbolt 3 port.
Key takeaway is tbolt drives can also be boot drives.. USB cannot due to dropped frames that will cause kernel panic

for intel macs, booting from USB 3 (even USB 2) is totally fine. for M chip macs, its the USB thats the issue, not the speed. Thunderbolt seems to bypass and work fine. Of course, this drive isnt Tbolt, so theoretically will not external boot capable on a M1/M2.

Which is true for just about *any* drive, but even more so on a "budget" drive like this. In this price range, you will find similar specs across the board, no matter the maker. Splitting hairs. You will need to move to a more expensive drive, or a RAID. If you are the kind of person that plans on copying more than 300 GBs everytime you use it and want optimatl speed, then yay gotta pay for it.

Im super perplexed in these forums how peeps come on her buying the *cheapest* thing they can get in whatever category then asking if it can solve the multiverse. huh?

Speed & Cost comparison of 2TB SSD drives:

Lacie Rugged Pro SSD Thunderbolt
2800MB/s. About $449.

Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD USB-C
2000MB/s. About $220

Sandisk Extreme SSD USB-C
1050MB/s. About $170

Crucial X8 SSD USB-C
1050MB/s. About $140 ($130 this sale)

Crucial X6 SSD USB-C
800MB/s. About $120

The LaCie Thunderbolt is fastest. The Sandisk Extreme PRO USB-C is next fastest at twice the speed of this Crucial drive. For professional editing, both are good with the edge going to the LaCie Thunderbolt. The Sandisk Extreme Pro is half the price, so a good value.

This Crucial X8 and the Sandisk Extreme (non-Pro) are good for general office and personal storage, but not up to par as a professional editing drive. You can use them with a Mac M1, for example, but will notice some lag taking roughly twice as long to read/write. If you're a hobbyist this might be OK, but if your income depends on deadlines you should invest in one of the faster options.

I'm not sure where you are going with this statement. Carrying about the speed and cache of a cheaper drive is just as relevant as a more expensive option.

The reason why this is important is because this x8 has a better cache than the Samsung t7. This slows down supposedly at 280gb where the t7 slows down much sooner.

So, are specs relevant even on 'cheaper' drives? Yes. Just as relevant on more expensive options.
