For those wondering about external monitors, the HDMI 1.4b port will not support a 4K monitor at 60hz

The USB-C port doesn't support Alt mode nor Power Delivery. You cannot use it to:

1) Charge your laptop
2) Connect to an external monitor, whether direct or using hub/adapter

I would not recommend purchasing this product!

I bought a similar laptop (https://slickdeals.net/f/15946015-hp-laptop-i5-1135g7-17-3-ips-12gb-ddr4-1tb-hdd-refurbished-300-free-shipping) and the laptop ceased to function after 120 days. Laptop would refuse to charge or start.

I took it to a repair shop that had a motherboard technician and they told me it was a motherboard issue. They ran diagnostics on it and the motherboard was getting warm and had current running through it, but would not function properly. The motherboard for this laptop is the same as for this deal (https://www.impactcomputers.com/m...pidx=78654).

The PC repair shop ordered one that was "open, but never used" as I speclate most of these boards come from refurbished laptops. It refused to work on my laptop. So, the repair shop ordered another one. That one also refused to work. I am currently on my third order.

If you check the Adorama reviews for my laptop, which also uses the same motherboard as this deal, someone else had the same issue where the laptop completely stopped working (https://www.adorama.com/r/ihp316h8uar-reviews).

Please don't purchase this product. It will be a lot of heartache just to have a functioning laptop for only 120 days. If you do purchase, get an extended warranty as you will most likely be trading one in for repair constantly.

I'm hoping the next rev of this laptop closes the gaps listed above. I'll wait until it does, and has similar pricing.

Handy, cheap, super portable little plex server you can easily stash in a closet (and have a local screen on in case you need to work on something, if you don't have Win10 Pro on there). Add $90 for PlexPass for the HW acceleration, and you've got a screaming fast server.

Plug it into ethernet, put a NAS (on ethernet too) online, and you're gtg.

That's exactly what I've been looking at laptops for recently.

What type of displays specs would you consider acceptable and available (i.e. past/current deals) in this price range (say $275-350)?

thanks for posting this OP Smilie ... normally I pay attention to warranties only because there's a chance the extended warranty protection on my credit card will kick in (they extend the warranty by one year and if they approve the claim they credit the original purchase back to your credit card as long as that card was used to make the original purchase - a lot of credit cards have this feature , I strongly recommend looking into it Smilie ) ....

Having said that I got curious and looked up this allstate warranty thing and apparently if you try to actually use it you get the runaround Frown

https://www.valueaddedresource.ne...-warranty/

Having said that the laptop is selling at a steeply discounted price so there's that...

For persons looking to upgrade the ram or replace the hard drive here's some videos I found

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDqM8XtfqTU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_R27DelvHE

regarding what he says about needing to buy a new windows product key if you upgrade to a bigger ssd drive... an alternative would be to just use a program you can download for free like Macrium Reflect home version (has very good reviews from what I understand even for the free version) , create a bootable macrium usb thumb drive (there are macrium reflect tutorials on youtube that walk you through how to do this and how to use macrium reflect in general) , make sure you have a big enough external usb drive to store the macrium reflect image of windows on , and try restoring that image to the new ssd drive...

..if you're careful and purchase it from a retailer that has a great return policy (for example on amazon look for "shipped by amazon" and "free returns", walmart has a great return policy but check the seller and whether or not you can return the item in your local walmart store for a refund and so forth ) then worst case scenario if it doesn't work out just ship the m.2 drive back and say it was defective (which could very well be the case) back to the seller, amazon in the scenario I mentioned above will give you a prepaid return shipping label or you can just drop it off at your local ups store. Then plug the original m2 drive that came with the laptop back in.

M2 drives are selling a lot cheaper nowadays than they used to so I would argue it's definitely worth looking into.. and you really should have a usb external drive you're regularly backing windows up onto anyways for your laptop in case windows decides to stop working, you get one of those nasty hacker viruses that locks up your entire laptop, et cetera.

pretty sure you can switch out of S mode though the switch is permanent (totally worth it in my opinion)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-...0back%20on.

One more thing worth noting, the advice here

https://www.laptopmag.com/article...aptop-tips

On the one hand you can't argue with the price Smilie ... on the other hand it's hard to tell how good the battery will be on the laptop given that it's in used condition. I looked on amazon and the reviews for third party battery replacements for this laptop are kind of iffy (small number of reviews with some bitter complaints about the replacement not working)... on the other hand if the newegg listing (specs section) I'm looking at is correct it was released in the year 2022 so hopefully the laptop isn't that old?

also worth keeping in mind... when I look at the return policy for this if I understand correctly it does say the buyer has to pay for return shipping.. no idea if you could appeal to ebay under the "item not as described" complaint and force the seller to pay for a prepaid shipping label to return the laptop instead. Either way take pictures of the return label or whatever shipping method you use and make sure you have proof (tracking number and so forth) the item was really returned back to them in case something ridiculous happens like the seller claims they never got the laptop back in the mail.

Was about to say the same thing. I see those specs and think, hey, not bad! Also, I have this laptop. The screen is nice and I'm pretty discerning. Looks as good as my 14" laptop with 4k screen. At these sizes it's hard to tell much difference. Generally I prefer using the 17". Same quality, but more real estate. However, some people prefer more nits. Indoor use is fine.

I picked up the next model up from this exact same eBay certified reseller (the 16gb 500gb version). It was a decent laptop but quite a bit bigger than I expected, even for 17.3in. It was also pretty heavy. Not a big deal if you're using this as a pseudo-desktop style machine but toting it around all day and trying to use it take notes in classes with made it seem not so great. Also, fwiw the one I got had significantly reduced battery life. Only lasted 4 hours on a single charge (with battery saver on, low brightness, lit keyboard off, only chrome running, and not letting it run when I wasn't actively using it). Ultimately sent it back and got something smaller for similar price. Not saying all of these are bad, just take note for what you want to use it for.
