I always wondered why people buy these cards except for a gift? These are a huge pain as you may end up having residue balance. Alternative is to check balance and spend accordingly. I got some $200 visa card from internet packages deal and could not find a convenient way to use them. Too many restrictions!
Most stores allow split payments even Dollar Tree.
I tell the cashier I have $X.XX remaining. I swipe the gift card.
Then I pay the remaining with another gift card or a credit card.

The only way to do split payment online that I know of is to reload Amazon gift card balance.

I tried getting these late last year with Chase Ink Cash. It's theoretically a great idea for 5x points everywhere, but there's a lot of limitations and things that make it a PITA
  • You're capped to $200 per transaction, though PayPal will allow splitting onto 2 cards, which helps drain remaining funds on a card with only a few $ left. But it's still capped.
  • International transactions won't be processed, and you'll figure out quite quickly a number of vendors you hoped to use the cards on are international
  • Using them in person almost always requires activating them first as it'll prompt for PIN or other information
  • Activating or checking balance is a PITA since the website prompts for probably the dumbest captchas in existence and the website is quite slow at it too
  • Edit: also it's a hit/miss whether Staples has them in stock. I visited one place that was sold out, and before I left, another person came in also to buy the gift cards LMAO
I have never had to set up a PIN with these gift cards for using them in person to buy stuff. Just press the key at the terminal for Credit. Different story when purchasing money order but that is another topic.

Checking balance is easiest by calling the number on the back of the card.

I mostly liquidated these prepaid cards via "overpaying" utility/cable/phone companies. Most of them allow "other" amount when paying online. So, I just paid $200 each transaction. As the result, my utility companies owed me a few hundred dollars in each month's bill. Once the "overpaid" negative balance is low, I will load a few more cards. So, last few years, I never need to "pay" those bills each month. If I need to close the account, my utility company usually will send check with those overpaid balance.

As far as zip code, if the card never used online before, any zip code and address will work fine. I never got declined using them that way on utility company website. But if used online already, it may link to whatever address/zip code used the first time.

Regarding the pin code, in old days, if card never set pin via phone or online registration, the pin is just the last 4 digit of the card number. Don't know if that still true for these new $7.95 fee package cards.

My insurance Allstates charge an installment for partial payment but the bill is adjusted to the full amount if you pay before the due date (so the installment fee is removed if the payment is paid in full in multiple installments as long as it is done before the origin due date)
I can confirm Progressive behaves the exact same way. Just make your last payment what it would be for the paid in full price remainder.

I was planning on using some of these to pay my insurance bill online. Then I noticed an 'installment fee' is charged for each payment under the full amount. My previous insurance company let me make as many credit card payments as I wanted with no fees. Doctors office and school also let me use multiple cards for a single bill, I had checked with them first but didn't think of checking with a major insurance company. I wish Staples had $400 cards with no fee.

Note that these NO LONGER WORK WITH PAYPAL. Must be a new change in 2023 that they snuck into the T&Cs. Even called the phone number and guy said since Paypal is a platform and not a merchant, that's why they don't work.
I had used many of these in 2022 with PP, but no more.

I always use these in stores which are non bonus spend for other credit cards.
e.g this quarter chase freedom is giving 5% on grocery spend. So I will not use these there. I will use them at restaurants, online shopping, utility bill payment etc.

I bought 8 cards today and I can't even register them online. Always saying invalid captcha. No issues using in store though and I was able to verify the balance using the number on the back of the card

Why would there be a "purchase fee"? And why would it be $6.95?
Seriously!? What kind of question is this??
