Sounds like user error and inexperience. Do yourself a favor and look up Smoking Dad BBQ on YouTube and get some exposure to the intricacies of kamado grilling. My gut says you'll change your tune once you have a better feel for how to use it.
I thought this was normal price. They went on clearance for ~$500 last fall.
Recently on clearance in store for 499-599

Note that this is the Classic II model with the air-life hinge. This is a great price especially with shipping included. This is normally listed around $1200. I highly recommend this Kamado if you are a grilling/smoking enthusiast. I have had mine since 2019. The build quality is excellent. Customer service is great also if you have any issues. One of the heat deflecting ceramic plates eventually cracked and broke just from natural heat and cooling expansion. I e-mailed them a picture and they sent me a brand new part.

The Classic I model periodically goes on sale for $500 but it has an older style hinge. That is not too bad but I recommend this version.

Ten plus year old Green Egg purchased at about same price hasn't had any cracked components…knock on wood.

Buyer beware Kamado cooking can definitely change your worldview on grilling/smoking.

Bought the equivalent model new in 2010, paid $399.97 in warehouse. Slick deal effect.

Finally opened the box this past June and assembled (man, it was heavy) - it cooks ok, I guess. Wish it would get hotter- don't believe the hype. People used to act like you could just use a tiny amount of charcoal, not at all the case in my experience, I used lump and definitely you need to load that basket. Honestly no better than a Weber kettle imo- flame away!
Same experience. I need a lot of charcoal to make the grill hot. But once hot, it stays at temperature for a really long time.

Was it the classic II for $500? I only remember the classic I getting that low. I bought a C2 @ 800 awhile back and love it. Fit a 16lb turkey in it for thanksgiving and it was by far the best turkey ive had.
It was the Classic I, not the II. We ordered it from Walmart for $499.99. It arrived shattered to bits, so we refused delivery. After a few weeks of trying to talk to someone in customer service and just being left on hold for like an hour each time, they just canceled the order weeks later.

You definitely need a full basket to go nuclear - I've had mine up in the 900F range without too much problem. So not being able to do so, as the other user is, certainly points to an issue with setting the grill up. Full basket, light a few starters, and fully open vents. In my experience, it'll be plenty hot (>600F) within about 1/2 hour.

Personally, I don't see the point in not keeping the firebox full of charcoal. If you're running 150F, the charcoal you don't use, and it should be a fair bit, will still be there the next time. At nuke temps I tend to use up the charcoal by the end. So I just fill up regardless.

But I do agree with whoever said it uses more charcoal the some folks claim. But that's also partly related to how you use it. Lower temps won't use as much.

As for the deal, I've seen $800 a few times. Yes, it's been lower but that's been the rare year end clearance or other unusual event. I remember Walmart, about 4-5 years ago, was clearing these out at $339. But not all stores had them. So if you're looking for a Kamado, you can jump on now at the normal lowest price or wait for the unicorn that may not come.

This is kind of tempting. I've got an older grill dome that needs about $300 in parts because they suck at actually honoring warranties. I like the unit, but I could probably sell it on Craiglist for $350 as is, then put that plus the $300 parts money into a new one backed by Kamado Joe and Costco.

It was definitely the classic II on season end clearance at Costco this fall. I got one for $550. At that price it's a no brainer. You can buy all of the components to upgrade it to classic III level and still be less expensive than buying a classic III. The actual ceramic grill is identical from II to III. The difference is the stand, shelves, and slo-roller system. There are some differences with the multi level racks too.

Bought this last time it went on sale at Costco - I won't lie, kinda wish I had the Big Joe but that's a different price point. But - if you're on the fence about if 18" grill is enough there's plenty of room for 3 racks of ribs (sideways), or 12 chicken quarters, or 14# brisket.

Haven't had this much fun with smoking noms in quite some time. Other commenters have (ahem) commented on the excellent build quality, along with the hinge on the back and the one-hand open on the front.

Combine this with a Looft lighter and a Meater probe and you're pretty much good to go Smilie

edit: mixing my BGE and KJ terms

This is mostly true. The Classic III ceramic grill shape is different, and larger, to accommodate the three tier system vs. the two tier. Because of this, I'm not sure the KJII can be fully upgraded to a KJIII.

You can do a double indirect on the one and two however the three does have three levels and a bit of extra height on the inside.
