Several months ago I was looking at the yellow top storage boxes, and noticed there were two slightly different designs (slightly different ribbing and pattern). For one style the lid fastened securely, on the other style it did not.
So I'd say look through these storage boxes carefully at the store, and make sure you are buying from a good batch, because maybe there are various factories making them with some differences.
Yeah- the black bins with yellow lids WERE on sale for $8.xx at Costco not long ago- but are now no longer on sale and are regularly priced at $9.xx. Still a deal IMO- IIRC they were $10+ prior to the $8 sale price

FYI the totes from HD and Costco look very similar but the dimensions are just different enough to not stack together at all, not even 'loosely'. I wouldn't mix and match.
The costco\Homedepot\Mendards tubs are all different, they wont stack nicely on each other. If somone has all HD tubs this is a good deal based on current price.
FYI this may depend on location but every Costco near me sell very similar looking totes but by Greenmade, not HDX. These brands do not stack well with each other, so for example a 27-gallon Costco/Greenmade tote's base is too wide to fit in the recessed lid of a 27-gallon HDX tote.
I found HDX to be a little more sturdier, but if you're a first time buyer and you don't plan on being rough with these, Costco will get the job done and be a much better everyday-price. And for those that are as OCD as me with the organization or your storage, these are not interchangeable so stick with the same brand you started with.

The sale was for $8 which I think it was ended. When I went to Costco yesterday here in Dallas Plano, it was 9.49.

These would really be a deal at $6.
