LOL, but in all seriousness, this is a hell of a deal and more than $100 off. Home Depot selling 8 foot studs for $3.35 right now, and when you "spend" the Menards rebate, you don't pay sales tax on the part of the purchase made with rebate check. So in my mind, this is about $143 off of $343 worth of studs.
And in my experience, you should only have to check about 20 in the pile to find one even remotely straight!

Great price. I just paid $3 a board for the cheapest 2x4s I could find at Lowe's. Wish I had a Menards near by. I'd go buy some and stick them in the shed. In any case it's nice to see lumber prices coming down.

Menards rebates are some of the easiest to submit and track, and have been the most reliable rebates I have run into.

Nah, it's a merchandise credit and they want you back in their store. Because their everyday prices on most items are higher than Lowe's and Home Depot, at least in my area (NE OH).

+1, and routinely ignore the "last day to mail" date too. (Bunch up more rebate receipts in one envelope.)

Some mailings have gone two months late and they've never failed to honor them.

My take: It's a good, honest and competent merchant.

True, but there aren't many building supply stores that do store credit "checks" that allow such a thing. I can't do this at Home Depot or Lowes, so I pay more taxes at those building supply stores than Menards. Buy $1000 worth of free after rebate hand sanitizer at Menards, pay zero tax up front, then buy whatever building supplies you need for your project tax-free. Worked for my last couple of year's worth of building projects at Menards.

If you're buying for business use why don't you just fill out the piece of paper that says so? It lets you avoid paying tax at point of sale. You charge the customer the tax later, and file that with your tax paperwork when all is said and done.

Just got back from Menards and purchasing 100. I used some rebates I already had to purchase them, so these were a good deal for me, since I'll get 100 back and didn't have to pay any tax on this sale.

Menards has spotty lumber, but these are the nicest 2x4s I've probably ever purchased. YMMV on that, but it ended up being a great deal for me.

A friend of mine is a salesman for a lumber supply. He says that the big box stores all get the top choice lumber and THEN the lumber yards get supplied. Big box stores have more volume therefore control the market. Lumber yards typically supply builders. Professional framers know how to deal with whatever lumber they are given.
My experience is the opposite. I always buy my lumber from lumber yards, as the quality is better (and the service is 10x better - drive your truck right up to loading). I will buy lumber from HD if I have to (say, for a weekend project), and pick through the stack to find the decent boards. Some time I get lucky and find quality lumber.

And my experience, you won't find a straight one in any of Home Depot's boards.

Good and important points: the issue is "Code," as adopted into law in your jurisdiction.

In Florida where I live, for example, each town or county enforces its own building code. They are all largely similar and based on a National Building Code ("NBC") model which is adopted into law as modified by the state.

In my case, the Florida Building Code or FBC...which as mentioned above, is then adopted by each municipality...with its own modifications...PLUS its own electrical, plumbing, and HVAC or "mechanical" codes for your subcontractors.

My point is that, among many other things, my P.E. or state licensed professional engineer's plans (drawn to comply with my city's adaptation of the Florida Building Code) specify, for example...

....that any studs that come in contact with any cementitious material, like bottom plates on poured slabs and wall studs covering the concrete or block perimeter walls must be pressure treated, non contact, #2 southern yellow pine (SYP), and,,,

...must be affixed with galvanized or zinc plated fasteners of a specified length (like a ¼" width X 3½" length Tapcon penetrating the underlying cementitious substrate by at least 2"...
...and then, of course, there are "Simpson" tìe-downs and strapping...and insulation for living space...and nailing patterns, etc., etc., etc!

Respectfully, many of you know all this, and for those of you who are less familiar, I simply offer it as a "heads-up" that things you already know how to do well and things that may never make a bit of difference may some day.

I think it's the Bible that says to all among us who are unlicensed contractors and DIYers, "love thy neighbor,"...and your Realtor, and your home inspector, and your insurance adjuster...because some day, your best work might come back and bite you in the A$$.

Peace friends. Have fun and a great weekend.

Steve

Yeah. Technically speaking, your anchor bolts should be tied to your foundation 12" down and use 5/8" anchor bolts and HDU5(at least here in NY). Then strap it with cs20.
I know you guys in florida have to use hurricane strapping for uplift connections and twisting.

In my area, Home Depot's and Lowe's prices are always higher than Menards. (Wisconsin. Menards home state) And good luck finding a straight board at Home Depot.

Home Depot matches Menards 11% rebates. You submit them online (save stamp) and you get an instant confirmation # that they've received it. Plus, I get Home Depot's rebate twice as fast and on a small credit card that fits in my wallet.

I'll echo what others said that I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this "cheap" lumber. The pallet they had down and unwrapped had ~110 boards on it for me to pick my 100 from. I was throwing them out as I went and ended up with 94 at the end. Rather than having them pull another pallet, I just went back through and picked the 6 best I had thrown out. Those boards were STRAIGHT. Didn't throw out a single one for warp/twist/bow, but rather knots, splits, and a couple really torn up live edges.
