I have this and use it often. Very happy with it considering the price. Bags are spendy though, esp. if you stick with name brand instead of generic alternatives.

Is there a system like this that generates less plastic waste?

Can anyone compare this to the Costco alternative. I was contemplating getting the Costco food saver but have read bad things about the newer model they switched to within the last year or two.

There is (was?) one at aldi for $30 that had the exact same functionalities. Not sure if it's still there. Seems a bit expensive for a manual crank one.

The 2100 that I have had an attachment that will suck the air out of mason jars.

Not as good as a true canning, but good enough for stuff that we just want to last longer or throw in the freezer.

There are similar attachments for custom tupperware that fits the port on the 2100 that will suck the air out of them.

None of those are as good as the plastic bags, but better than wasting for things that don't need to be sealed quite as well as the bags would do.

If you use the rolls, you can custom make them as small as you'd like though to minimize waste. Or, make them larger so you can re use them more often ...this really depends on what you're sealing though .... Don't reuse a bag you had raw chicken in, for example, use your judgement.
