BofA 5 yr loan just under 6% = just under $1000/month payment.
$19.75 x 8x5x4 = $3160 - 20% tax = $2528
$2528 - $1000 = $1528 for rent, food, insurance, etc.
Obviously if a hard working teen/young adult can, no reason a person making more can't buy one.
.....
That said, anyone reading "Smart Women Finish Rich" would laugh the Tesla buyers to the grave because there's far more economical alternatives (and even if you don't go with sub-$18k gas cars, there are cheaper ev cars).
E.g. $18k Nissan Versa
Monthly $344 for 5 years
( $1000/month tesla - $344 ) x 12 x 5 = $39360 savings.
And at $4.50/gallon at a minimum 30mpg, that's 262,400 miles of driving that needs to be done before the gasoline eats up the $39360 difference.
....
Even without looking far, a Nissan Leaf sits under $30k and even if you happen to have the 150~ mile round trip commute, you can recharge overnight.
....
You forgot to add the income tax credit and California rebate that would apply. Also, there's no engine to maintain. You could say the same thing to a Mercedes or BMW buyer too. I would have saved a fortune on a home if I bought in Compton.
Teslas aren't on CA's approved ev list.

Right now, it's a "maybe" you'll get the rebate.
And the feds killed the big tax credit, which isn't going to do any good for earners that have a $0 or negative tax liability.
But let's be "generous" and drop a $48k tesla by $10 in credits/rebates to $38k.
Anyone want to do the math?
$38k tesla - $18k versa = $20k, which is still a 133,333+ mile drive in the Versa to make up the cost difference in gasoline.
...
Teslas need maintenance - https://www.autoguide.c
So lower than gasoline cars, but still not $0.
....
A home is typically an appreciating purchase.
Hold it a decade and the value when sold is most likely higher (recessions aside).
A car is typically a depreciating practice.
Hold a Tesla or other common car for a decade and the price is typically far lower (collector vehicles aside).

Ie. DON'T DEPEND ON GETTING THE REBATE EVER.
Right now, it's maybe, maybe not situation, but you can queue up buying a Tesla and applying, then maybe get a rebate later.

$1528 for food, rental, car insurance, and electricity is a big stretch. It's livable, but a stretch.
Anyway, if you have minimum wage, don't buy things you can't afford.
I cannot speak to others, but my model y insurance cost exactly the same as my sienna (with similar MSRP). About 800 dollar a year. ( I am in CA, I pay about 1700 for 3 cars a year )
You may need to shop around if you have good driving record. I am always confuse when people brought up Tesla is more expensive to insure.
quite the opposite, my insurance company gives discount for safety features (which Tesla has a ton of)
News flash, a vast majority get another tech job. 10,000 highly educated people don't just sit moping around.
Speaking as someone who's brother was laid off on Friday from a Dell subsidiary, I hope you're right but this is ridiculously callous.

Which insurer and which part of CA? Thx.
Liberty mutual, SD area
Thanks. 196/mo (worse than Geico with lower liability), SF E Bay, no record good credit. Must be the area.
You cannot just take those at face value when you do a online quote, you need call an agent and have them apply all the discount that applies to you. This applies to all insurance ( i don't like the process, but that's how it works)
Nah, they pulled everything automatically & applied edu/association discounts so I doubt any different. In fact, with Farmers (through company affiliate) I've been quoted even more than online over ph. There's no way to get much under 2k yr here & Geico knows it.

Tons of factors from age, city, sex, record, etc affecting insurance costs.
Coverage greatly affects this. (E.g. $30k vs $100k for injury)
Vs Tesla $800/yr CA, my new versa is $1170~, old xA $1570~ ($30/100 + comprehensive, liability, collision).
And this isn't with shopping around - with SF in SoCal.
...
$1170-800 = 82 gallons of gas @ $4.50 = 2,500 mile difference in cost @ 30mpg versa.
.
But car insurance is about as worthless as Socal Gas here - they'll artificially raise rates for no good reason all the time (and even worse, never give you the value of all the money you've paid them - ie. Pay $200 / month for 10 years into any other good investment and you ought to be able to pull out at least $25k, but car insurance will always shortchange you.).

And more rate increases coming!
