It would also be nice if I could plug it in into my XSX to play HD-DVD discs.

So no, it does not outweigh them for that use case. The only one where it makes sense is if you always need to have every new release on day one (can't wait for a sale) and then beat it and sell it within weeks to get some of your money back.
Is it the pandemic supply chain problems or is it simply an excuse for them to charge higher margins, seeing how many people pay. In the end it's a self fulfilling prophesy... if people pay, the prices become new normals.
The margins on these can't be very high... they likely get most of that from game and online content sales, whereas someone like Nvidia does raw margins, which is why a 4080 costs $1200.
If your household has 2 Playstations, you link your accounts to both, and whenever you buy any Digital game, the 2nd Playstation will have full access to it. For example, I play coop/online games with my wife. Every time we want to try any game, I only need to buy one digital copy and we both can play. And even single player games, I would buy on my account and my Wife will have her own to play if she wanted. We never have to wait on each other to play any of the games.
In this scenario, essentially all my games are buy one, get a copy free.
And seriously, when you have a huge game library, it's just way too convenient to swap between games without needing to run around loading discs. On that point, of the 2 PS5s in my household, one is the disc version. It's only used to play old games... which personally, hasn't been often. Pretty much 95% of my games are digital.
