Well up until now I have been a diehard Xbox weenie since the original Xbox came out. I've literally owned every version of Xbox (especially the Halo Editions) but I am not one of those collectors, I always trade them in towards the new release console. I had never played on a PlayStation, never owned one, had absolutely no interest in it at all. I am a former Network Engineer my specialty was in Windows so a Microsoft game console was a natural progression for me. What changed? Microsoft's flat out refusal to do anything VR with the Xbox is not only stupid, it's robbing it's user base of amazing experiences. I had an Oculus Go, Oculus Rift S & I have a Quest 2, they're cool, but not as seamless & immersive as a console based solution would be. I had seen PSVR on YouTube & liked it. Then I found out about PSVR 2 & OMFG 🤯 I was not prepared for it to be that mind-blowingly impressive! So I immediately ordered the PS5 Digital God of War Ragnarok Bundle & Pre-order the PSVR 2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Bundle. I had no idea PS5 graphics were so incredible! It's hard to believe the Series X & PS5 have the same hardware, because the PS5 looks & performs so much better than the Series X in my opinion anyways. Of course I'll have to keep an Xbox, because I've been a massive Halo fanboy since day 1 too.
Exactly why I'm looking at PS5 now; unfortunately, you are sitting around $1k just to have the capability to play PSVR. (console and PSVR2). Have 2 Xbox One and 3 years of Gamepass, thanks to slick deals, to hopefully keep me entertained, but the PSVR2 is quite impressive.

Didn't this console come out like four years ago? Or so?
Yes, the manufactured scarcity is the most ridiculous scam I've seen in 30 years of gaming

So ironic -- I wanted one so badly all of last year -- and now that they are readily available, I sort of don't care
Same here... Being unable to find one at MSRP over the past couple years made me realize I am just fine without a PS5. I have definitely lost interest over the last year.

IDK why this post is getting so much praise. I'll just play those games on my PS4 duh. Its not like my PS4 just disappears when i get a PS5.

As one of the most likely to fail components on a console I've thought a detachable disk drive should have been an option since the Sega Saturn or so. The closest thing we got to it before now was the HD-DVD drive for the XBox 360.
I've always thought the same thing but sadly, that HD-DVD drive wasn't even capable of playing games. That's too bad because with Xenia now available for Xbox, I could be using it to rip all my 360 games. (Luckily the 360 installs games to external storage natively, but it would be nice to just plug that drive into my laptop to rip games.)

It would also be nice if I could plug it in into my XSX to play HD-DVD discs.

Nobody is going to stop buying digital games. Wasting my time changing discs, worrying about scratches and damage, and then wasting more time trying to sell or trade it in for pennies on the dollar most of the time. Unless you have to buy every new release on day one and then are selling it within 2 weeks, digital is just better. Follows me to any console I play on, don't need to bring the disc with me between rooms or even different houses in some cases.
To each their own, everyone should do as they like, I'm just glad I can get my money back for games I do not like, but if you buy digital, you're SOL, but there are some advantages to buying digital, but buying physical far outweighs them for me… i've only bought digital a few times and each time I felt I got burned because I ended up not enjoying the game as much as I thought I would, never again, so far I'm really glad I didn't buy the digital copy of stray

Can you open a physical game, play it for an hour, decide you don't like it, and return it? No? Because buying digitally, you CAN.

So no, it does not outweigh them for that use case. The only one where it makes sense is if you always need to have every new release on day one (can't wait for a sale) and then beat it and sell it within weeks to get some of your money back.

Is it the pandemic supply chain problems or is it simply an excuse for them to charge higher margins, seeing how many people pay. In the end it's a self fulfilling prophesy... if people pay, the prices become new normals.

The margins on these can't be very high... they likely get most of that from game and online content sales, whereas someone like Nvidia does raw margins, which is why a 4080 costs $1200.

That's what I'm doing. And I will pass on that too if I can't get it at retail with a reasonable amount of effort. Not playing this nonsense. If Sony can't properly release a console that's on them. It's just video games. Perfectly happy with my PS3.

I don't see this mentioned enough, regarding one huge benefit to Digital purchases.

If your household has 2 Playstations, you link your accounts to both, and whenever you buy any Digital game, the 2nd Playstation will have full access to it. For example, I play coop/online games with my wife. Every time we want to try any game, I only need to buy one digital copy and we both can play. And even single player games, I would buy on my account and my Wife will have her own to play if she wanted. We never have to wait on each other to play any of the games.

In this scenario, essentially all my games are buy one, get a copy free.

And seriously, when you have a huge game library, it's just way too convenient to swap between games without needing to run around loading discs. On that point, of the 2 PS5s in my household, one is the disc version. It's only used to play old games... which personally, hasn't been often. Pretty much 95% of my games are digital.

Considering that consoles get upgraded every 7 or so years, and the PS5 came out just over 2 years ago, that's gonna be half a decade wait for you.
