Just get it on GOG with no DRM and easily install it on your desktop and laptop. Make sure to get the Horn of the Abyss fan expansion. It adds very functional multiplayer. I play against my dad about once a month on it.
I know it's not on sale on GOG, so add it to your wishlist and wait a month for a sale.
EDIT: I just want to endorse the HD Mod. I recommend "1550x872" resolution in HD settings for a full HD (1920x1080) monitor. That sizes everything to my preferences. My dad's eyes are worse and does "1365x768". I'm happy with "SmoothSal x2 + Hermite" on the Stretch filter.
https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/ <- HoMM3 HD mod (increases resolution, fixes a few bugs, and makes the game way more comfortable to play vanilla) https://heroes3wog.net/ <- Tons of awesome mods with new factions, heroes, towns, maps, etc. (Horn of the Abyss and In the Wake of Gods are the two that are the biggest IIRC). https://heroes3wog.net/succession-wars-download/ <- Shout out to "Succession Wars" which is a total conversion of HoMM3 dedicated to the style of HoMM2! If you're a fan of the previous entry, this is absolutely worth checking out.
Classic game. Still very fun.

loved this game back in the days! too bad one game can take hours to complete, tried to play with friends over dial up... man it was a torture when disconnected.

Not worth it. Ubisoft Connect is TERRIBLE.

yes I was just about to say this! I have HOMM 1 to 5 on GOG. You can only get HOMM 6 and 7 on Ubisoft and those games do not work at all on Ubiplay But Ubi won't allow you to get HOMM 6 or 7 anywhere else . I will say that HOMM 3 does not look that great on GOG . There is an unofficial fan Mod or update or whatever that updates the graphics in an amazing way that makes it look great . I had that version on my old laptop but I lost the link for this fan update so if anyone has it I would appreciate the link .
I lived in this game back in the day. Oh, did you know HoMM3 is still alive and has a big community today? How about the board game they released like less than a year ago I guess?

I popped in to say exactly what you said.
The indie version of Heroes 3 is world's better than the official version.
Another vote for GOG. It's full price ($10) at the moment but they pretty frequently discount it to $2.50 on there. I know it was $2.50 for their Winter sale that just ended a few days ago.
I played it all the time when it first came out, and it's kinda crazy how popular it still is. I just binged a bunch of HOMM3 series on YouTube by Norovo, and I reinstalled it and got back into it. Such a great game! And the graphics still look great. Definitely recommend the HD mod, as in addition to widescreen resolutions there are some nice QoL features included as well.

Same experience. I got HOMM3 for free as dlc for buying HOMM7. I register the code in Uplay and see the game in my library. When I click on it, it then redirects me to Steam and opens up the store page for me to purchase it, it doesn't show that I own it. I contact Ubisoft they tell me to contact steam. When I contact steam they tell me to goto Ubisoft. Don't bother. Get the gog version it actually works without all the bulls...

This is still my favorite game of all time.
