what brand do you recommend that is just "add water" ? I can't say as I've ever seen instant mashed that didn't require milk and butter.
If you use a just add water version, use chicken broth/stock instead of water. I taught my kid this when he was in a college dorm and only had a microwave.

What's the shelf life on these?

Wondering how long they last. Might be good for emergency food.
they actually last longer than the expiration date as long as you don't open the package. I'd say 6 months to a year depending on the environment.

I've done that too. You should pay attention to the sodium/salt using the two though as some of the flavors are often a bit salty.

Cost aside, I would rather add my own milk and butter than ingest whatever dehydrated artificial stuff other brands might use to simulate those flavors. Not that these instant potatoes are healthy anyway...
Agreed. I'd rather peel (which isn't hard) actual potatoes and use some grassfed butter than this stuff

Not a viable solution. To have a chicken stock on hand is no easier than butter.

Where can you not keep chicken stock or butter on hand?

Totally pass, these are inexpensive as you need to add your own butter and milk to make it.
The problem with Idaohan instant mashed potatoes is that the bag is only 4 ounces and you only get 4 servings from that. If you ever made Betty Crocker and Idaohan mashed potatoes in the pot, you would clearly notice that the Idaohan is far less mashed potatoes. Read the nutrition label.

Idaohan = 4 servings per bag
Betty Crocker = 8 servings per bag

Huge difference.

Have you ever made homemade mashed potatoes? I prefer homemade mashed potatoes and I make it really good but you forget about the time it takes to make homemade mashed potatoes. You are talking about 10 minutes prep time and 30 minutes to cook. (Betty Crocker cookbook recipe that I use). Time matters. Plus if you make a large pot of mashed potatoes, you really gotta to finish it quickly because it will spoil pretty quickly. That is a lot of mashed potatoes from 6 potatoes.

The instant little bag potatoes are convenient, pretty cheap and the right amount size.

I haven't found a single brand that doesn't taste like...well....dehydrated instant potatoes. If you're not picky about taste, and don't have the time to peel, boil, and mash, nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing like the real thing.
