I have this printer. It's good, not perfect. In MacOS, to have it print better, give the printer a static IP address from your router, like 192.168.1.50, that never changes. Then, in MacOS, set up MacOS to print to that IP address (not using Bonjour), and you'll not have problems printing.

AirPrint, in my experience, requires that the printer NOT be sleeping. This is very annoying, and mostly requires tapping the touch panel and waking the printer before air printing. Needless to say, i rarely use that feature.

Quality is fine for a cheap laser. It holds 250 sheets of paper, sufficient for me for a year or more.

Scanning can scan to a NAS / network target, like 192.168.1.25\scans, with a previously created username/password. This is useful.

I've no experience with replacing toner cartridges as I'm still on my first batch from 2020. I'm sure I'll be shocked at pricing when the time comes.

Overall, I'd do it again, particularly given how pricing for printers, lasers in particular, seems to have jumped.
FYI, This one doesn't duplex print. I have the MF634Cdw that I snagged Nov 2018 before covid at $199. Works great but I need to take in to have the toner catch tank (whatever it's called) emptied.
Laser toner is just bits of tinted plastic. They don't go bad. You might have to shake up the cartridge to loosen them if it sits for a long time, but that's about it.

Can this print reasonable photos? I don't need the best quality in the world, but need a 5x7 glossy every so often to mail to the non-email-aware family elders.

Walgreens. They'll even mail it for you.

This is how much I despise inkjets. I've wasted hundreds on multiple inkjets, hoping they'd finally fixed the clogging and wasted ink issues.

Nope…..

Would this be better than my newly purchased Epson ecotank?

I need a daily printer for my children's school use. How is this compared to the Inkjet printer from Costco:
https://www.costco.com/epson-ecot...51752.html.Any recommendation would help me decide [costco.com].

I got my wife the model above that one from Costco. It has been great so far. She has printed close to 2000 pages and all the ink tanks are still over half full. She is a teacher and prints almost everything in color. I have no experience with the color laser in this post, so I can't compare it to the epson.

I've been using this printer for over two years now. Other than connection issues with our PCs and the lack of an auto document feeder (a killer for some) it works well. Replaced the original starter cartridges with 3rd party from Amazon for about $50 and they seem to work well.

I snagged that deal too, with an extra free set of toners.

I've got it available locally, but I'm not sure if I want to go with the 600dpi. I've got a 1200dpi printer at work, and it's pretty phenomenal. What is everyone's thought on the difference before 600 and 1200? Duplex isn't necessarily a killer considering the price difference. I'm coming from a Canon Pixma MX922 (9600 x 2400 dpi), but I still feel like the laser will give me a clearer image. Thanks for your insight!

I bought this printer years ago and it worked very well beside one issue I was never able to resolve - all my print jobs would have a single streak down on it. Even with new ink cartridges, it never went away. I tried contacting support but had no luck. Other than the streak, this was a great printer

Wow I'm tempted as my 10 year old brother b/w laser is on its last leg but I probably should wait for higher dpi and duplex at this point.

Qualified "no", depending on your definition of 'reasonable'. Think of the color functionality more for office or school graphics: charts, graphs, shapes, logos, even web pages etc. Printing a loved one's face will not turn out well. Big Grin

And definitely not glossy (you can't use photo paper if that's what you're asking).

We have the MF644CDw model. It works great and does have duplex on our model. However, as others have mentioned, make sure you go into your router settings and set a static IP for your printer. Else, it likes to disconnect and change IP addresses constantly. And it works okay w/ printing from iPhone, Mac, PC and Android for us, but sometimes it takes a minute or two to properly show active. Especially on a Macbook. Not a dealbreaker, but certainly annoying.

The ones I purchased last year that have worked great, are no longer available it says. Could have been pulled due to the reviews. Maybe I don't need my toner catch emptied and just need OEM carts. I'll spend the $90 to find out next week.
What catch tank? What are you referring to? I bought the MF642Cdw in November, 2019 for $150 (it was $170 minus $20 Amex BestBuy deal) and use it extensively. There is no "catch tank" and it's not at all clear what you're talking about.
