Not so slick, MSRP is inflated and there's a 990 model out now. I'll think I'll wait for the 990 price to drop a bit
What scenario are these kind of speeds needed? I'm on the other side of the fence here looking into whether I should even bother with a 980 Pro vs a 970 Evo Plus. Even if one SSD is twice as fast as another, nowadays we're talking about differences in only milliseconds for read/write operations on these things, they're just all insanely fast.

You'd pretty much only need this for super high-end gaming, or for video production.

The article I linked to is only 2 weeks old. It's still highly probable a drive purchased today is at risk. Why even take a chance when it's a 5 minute fix to update the firmware?
I bought 2 of these (jn Oct and Nov) and both were showing as "up to date" in Samsung Magician this week

I do agree that if you're going to just install it in a PC, update the firmware (or check it), it's easy. Where it becomes a hassle are when you've installed in other devices or are purchasing for them (like a PS5) and your PC only has a single NVME slot. Mine is behind the graphics card, so it's a process to install/remove it and then install your original afterwards.

If I were to purchase another today for a PS5, I probably wouldn't bother with updating it because it's a hassle (and for someone with an older PC, I don't think it's possible to update it?)

Yep, $144 at Samsung. Just need to add it to cart and price will adjust automatically. 10% cashback from RMN takes care of the tax.
Is there an easy catch-all way to get EPP discount? Wife used to have a university email but not anymore.

Is this better than the SK Hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 [amazon.com] I paid the same price 29 days ago?
P41 is a little faster and runs cooler. It has a newer gen NAND and newer, faster controller. You won't notice a difference in general use, as long as you have a basic heatsink on them.

If you buy this go to Samsung's website, download Samsung Magician and make sure your firmware is up to date. There's a known bug in early firmware revisions that cause premature drive failure.

As a technologist, it bothers me that a piece of hardware was shipped with such a severe bug. I keep all of my stuff fully up to date, but it should be optional because there are plenty of people that just don't know to do stuff like this. The culture of "fix it after we ship it" (which is probably deadline driven and happens a lot with video games too) is disappointing.

Student discount from Unidays or EPP = $143.99 subtotal
15% CB from a certain CB site = $21.60
CC 2% CB

Got it for $134.06 total including tax

Thanks OP!

I think there used to be a loophole where everyone can sign up for EPP with a referral link. There was also student beans through edu emails purchased from ebay but covid and ebay crackdown ended that. Now it's legit means only; either a verifiable current student or work for a large company that has EPP program with Samsung.

Ok, so this is gonna sound stupid. I ordered the sn850x a few weeks ago when it was 179.99 and 980 pro was not on sale. It is now the same price as the 980pro today. So, ymmv, but you can try to go to customer support chat, and ask for some money back. (I mean, you can also return and order what yo want, but that is kind of wasteful. I really wanted the 980pro with heatsink. But I don't want to return and order another item).

They gave me 10% of 179.99+tax, but not $20 or $20+tax. I asked, but wasn't given an explanation why.

Anyway, link for chat since it's hard to find https://www.amazon.com/hz/contact...hubgateway

Good luck!

This article kind of makes me kind of uncomfortable with these drives: https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/7...-defective

I know they issued firmware updates, but who knows if it actually fixed the problem in the long run. I bought 2 of the SN850Xs instead. I do have 1 980 pro that isn't in use at the moment.

I agree, given it's clear these things have software flaws that reducing the lifetime by 90+%, you'd think they'd be selling at <$50/TB

I might bite on this for my wife's new Dell XPS 8950. With EPP for the 2 TB with heatsink, it is $161.99. CB is $24.30, and tax is $13.19, and CC CB is only 1% for me, so net price is $149.38. Makes a great Valentine's Day gift!
