I honestly left out the details on purpose because it sometimes leads to pointless know-it-all AV banter on here that I can't stand… but since you asked, ultimately, I couldn't get good sound from it despite a lot of effort. The stage was off and just couldn't be dialed in. Compared to my Yamaha rx1900, the center was VERY weak even with raised levels. This made it feel under powered even though it has plenty of power. I went through multiple tests of varied #s of days and even had my wife swap secretly swap between the denon and yamaha and I recognized the difference and felt it was substantially worse every single time. She even swapped it 3 times in one day, determined to throw me off and I still picked up on it immediately both with music and movies each time within minutes. And to be clear, it wasn't just that it was different, it was irritatingly worse. Despite initially believing I was just recognizing the difference she eventually said she could tell there was a lack of clarity with the Denon. We dont put subtitles on often, but had to several times. In summary, the easiest way to put it is to say it sounded cheap. I have another Yamaha in the basement… forget the model #, but it was probably a $400 receiver MSRP and the Denon was certainly better than that, but not by that much. My unit was one of the initial batch with the hdmi bug, so maybe they got better, or maybe I had a lemon. I spent about an hour talking to denon and crutchfield support (they were both really great) and offered a few different things to try, which did change things, but ultimately NOT for the better. This probably isn't too helpful, but there you go.
You didn't say what made you return. Was the unit defective? Didn't do what the manual said it'd do? The audio quality wasn't good? All the reviews available on the internet (here [audiosciencereview.com] is a detailed one) as well as the owners' thread on AVS would disagree with you.

For the record, I don't have one and no first hand experience.
It's not easy to swap multi-channel receivers in a home setting, there are many, many wires and cables to disconnect and reconnect. So when you mentioned your wife swapped them out 3 times in a day, I don't believe you.

I agree. The x3700h is the one to grab (only one 8k in though), but the price is prohibitive.

What's the cheapest it's been? AVR have gone through the roof! The Yamahas all went up like $300

3700h is engineered with substandard parts and QC. I had one for 60 days and didn't have a single hesitation returning it… just not worth it. Don't take my word for it, we all like things for different reasons, just make sure you buy from somewhere that has a good return policy

I'm using Yamaha RXV781 and I too have issue with center channel sounding weak despite raising db and retrying calibrations. Not sure if you have figured out the solution or have any advise for me to try. My center channel speaker is one of the top ones, klipsch 504c

Fair enough. Other than center being "weak" (I am interpreting as high distortion at the level you listen) what you said it is very subjective. There are too many variables like the room (size, MLP distance, reflections etc.), speakers (efficiency, placement etc), room correction used, source material... since you spoke to the support at both Denon and Crutchfield I am guessing basic setup with room correction was done and all the speakers were producing sound. Source was the same for both so it's possible you got a lemon (other than HDMI bug) as Yamaha RX1900 is not "higher" end compared to X3800 though it has slightly more power.

My other theory is that Audyssey is "correcting" the sound for your room which you are not used to since the RX1900 with its ancient YPAO probably didn't do much. In any case, you did the right thing by returning it. A more current build of X3700H might work for others though.

I agree that the Denon is not up to great sound quality, the Denon x3700H don't have good sound quality. I compared it with the Marantz at BB, and the Marantz clarity is a lot better. Even the Denon x4700H didn't sound as good as the Marantz.

Agreed. I'm trying to get my 3700 repaired as I type this.

My x3700 has been great since I got it at Christmas. I got a new one with the updated hdmi board and couldn't be happier.
