I have this combo. The reel is a hair on the heavy side but built like a tank. Keep it rinsed and it's good to go for a decade. The rod is actually ok for a combo piece. I paid the $229 two years ago and don't regret it, so this price is great for what you get.

I've got a Spinfisher V, and the rod is excellent, so unless you have some reason to believe that's changed, you are probably wrong.

I got the 4500 on a 7' medium rod for $84.50 from Amazon on January 3rd, 2019 when they were switching to the new models.

The 4500 is about as big as I would consider for that (even that is overkill at a lake). 6500 is a very large, heavy reel. There's always exceptions like big catfish, or grouper off piers, but in general this is way too big for inshore and lake fishing.

You don't need this reel unless you're fishing for really, really big and strong fish. For north America and freshwater that does NOT mean any pike/musky/pickerel/trout/salmon unless your going for 60+ pounders.
It does mean biggest possible catfish, alligator gar and sturgeon.
In salt it means bare minimum >50lbs and I certainly wouldn't use this reel for anywhere near as small a fish personally.
I agree with the bad walmart reviews of the rod as absolute junk. The reel you should be able to pick up for around $100 on a good sale at some point regardless of inflation.

I purchased the slammer iii 3500 and 4500 when it came out for 125-129 plus tax then middle of pandemic some more 3500 from basspro/cabelas for about $115 to 125 after tax and after r10 cashback. The slammer iii 6500 has been this price just for the reel this past year and you'd be way better off with that and a separate rod for a little more.
edit... but I personally wouldn't use of the 4500 which I believe is the same as the 3500 but bigger spool.... not sure if I remember that correctly... much of anything from fishing for snapper, snook, cobra to over 80lbs, grouper smaller than warsaw/Goliath. if I was going to intentionally try to catch shark and expecting 7plus footers or marlin, sailfish, big tuna then I'd probably be using this or a conventional of similar capacity.

I do agree with most of what you're saying but the larger reel isn't only for increased drag. 5000 sized or more reels are something I don't mind having when I'm dead sticking while surf fishing. Having that capacity to get 100 yds +/- out and heaving that flexibility to work bigger fish is a nice luxury to have. Overall, it all depends on what type of fishing you're doing. That said, the rod with this is not meant for surf casting.

No, a 6500 level reel is going to be a big heavy reel for big fish in the 20 to 60 lb range. I have several Penn reels, both Spinfishers and Battles, and my 6500s are spooled with 50# braid. For inshore fishing, for redfish, trout, flounder, that kind of thing, I like a 3000 level reel spooled with 20# braid and a 6' to 6.5' foot medium action rod.

for surf I tend to use less than 20lb or maybe 30lb superline if not throwing out a giant hook with live bait for shark (I don't really do this much at all) so can fit a ton on most reels.
I also like a real surf cast spinning reel (super slow oscillating long shallow tapered spool) or baitcaster/conventional like daiwa luna, daiwa steeze, daiwa millionaire, shimano calcutta d, abu revo toro or similar.
If using a big boat rod or pier fishing with this setup for really large things... I would well as I said not... would choose a big water ugly stik if you want tough on budget and not work much finding a deal. I'm not sure what it's called but there is a blue wrapped ugly stick thats a higer model than the yellow i believe and i think it comes in a heavy boat version... i have a couple heavy regular spinning ones of the model.. that would be a good simple choice to pair with penn reel on a budget vs this combo... the I have several big boat/pier rods I don't really use much at all even on the boats. Just don't find it fun anymore. But I all the ones I have including combo junk walmart Shakespeare ones from about 22yrs ago I would recommend over the combo penn here.
I've caught >500lb Goliath grouper on 30lb mono on Shakespeare conventional combo from Walmart and got a 22' greater hammerhead to the surface with same but with 50lb mono and a 12' steel leader.
Despite it being a moderately large conventional reel - I'd say its not as large size as this reel comparatively.

I'm rambling, it's late and I'm not going back to proof read.... so hope this makes sense.

If you can spend a bit more I have my slammers paired to daiwa proteus, daiwa fantastia regista, star rods lite I think not sure model, tfo pro, tfo tactical elite which has no problem in salt despite being freshwater, and I may be missing a pairing or four.

In fishing for snook, reds, snapper, small grouper, cobia, Trippletail, jacks, blacking tuna, etc. I tend to use a 3000 or less (wuth some 500 and 1000 in there) spinning or baitcasting of similar capacity with max 20lb superline or 10,12 and 15lb mono on a couple spools with 8-10lb superline being my most spooled with 12-25lb mono or fluorocarbon leader up to 30 or the odd 40 if really worried about abrasion like fishing around Bridge pilings primarily.
and freshwater for the likes of bass, trout including lake, pike, musky, pickerel, walleye, catfish even monsters.. I would use a 2500 or less with 2lb mono to max 10lb mono, fluro, superline. there is no excuse in my mind to ever fish with 40, 50, 60, 80lb superline for bass on a heavy fast action rod rated for same. I would also argue I will always be able to outfish somone using a giant foot long hard swimbait and there is no excuse to ever use those apart from being a silly showoff.

one stipulation is I have not done downrigger trolling and realize that might benefit from a bigger stronger setup.
