Avoid lowrance. Especially the cheap models.

One way to check on which brand to buy, look at the equivalent model (say you are spending $300) from 5 years ago. Then go check how many updates they have made to the software.

Buy this junk from lowrance and it will have a bug they won't fix...

Really show me one fishfinder with this many features at this price? I've also never had a fish finder need a software update except for maps and that's usually something you pay for no matter what

I have the same fish finder with tripleshot for 3 years on my kayak. wish I paid this price works great.

These are noisy garbage. The filtering on these is awful. You'll feel like you're watching TV static from the 80's.

Look at all the big spenders in this thread! They're telling you that this finder is not top of the line, which it's not, but they seem to be comparing it to much more expensive models. For $100, this is a steal.

Isn't it this price every 6 months or so? Or is this the actual decent model that's normally $200 on sale?

Don't need this GPS device to get me to the lake. Fish are in the water, you're welcome.

Correct...if you do any sort of mapping...which I can't imagine not doing if you actually are fishing. ..the cheap units overheat and or reboot.

But no, with garmin it just makes the map for you live...I don't pay for anything extra..and it doesn't crash once you have a lot of data.

I guess wanting the finder to keep up with my location at 50mph is different than paddling...

I used to feel the same way. I can say that using a fish finder has greatly increased my success rate.

Giving this one a go for my yak. For $99 might be hard to go wrong.

Get a lowerance live and use the active target as well as the sidescan sonar to find fish below or in front of you. I use lowrance for my research mapping water bodies and besides the fact that getting the data out of the unit is a pain in the butt (I use either reefmaster or hydromagic), they have been working very well for me.

I use a garmin casable gps/sonar for the kayak. You dont even need to put it in the water. Place it in a plastic bag against the hull and it works well. But you will ave to shed a bit more than 99 bucks, but you can cast it ahead of you and find ifish as well as build maps.
