Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

I ordered it last week was it or just the first day it was posted. I was charged on my card but never received a confirmation email or anything. Should have saved my order completed page. And haven't received anything. Anyone else has similar experience?
It'll drop charge if you didn't get the confirmation page or email. Takes several days.

Thanks but in one of the QnA, someone mentioned that service has to be active for 180 days to unlock.

Unlock eligibility requirements

We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device's activation date.

No mention that it has to be active.

Does metro activate the line automatically if I don't activate it myself? I don't plan on using it until the 180 days are over.
From my understanding, no. You have to put the sim in and activate yourself. This is what I think from reading through multiple threads on this in the past month or so.

I didn't get a confirmation email on an order on Thursday, but saved my confirmation number. Monday afternoon got an email saying my order shipped.

If you can get the website to work, place order, receive phone and Sim, insert Sim, activate phone, turn off auto pay, don't pay for anything past the initial cost, store phone for 180 days, turn on and unlock.

Ordered mine on Thursday. Received a UPS notification this morning saying it will arrive tomorrow. All I had to do was setup a Metro account with a 8 digit passcode. No credit checks or security questions. I used Edge to order.
I ordered yesterday morning and it shipped yesterday, arrives tomorrow.

How did you setup a Metro account without the phone? Did you port in an existing phone number? I selected give me a new number during purchase and it gave available area codes for my address. I chose an area code, but I didn't see that it assigned a specific phone number during the checkout process.

So I'm assuming when I get the phone and put in the sim, then I'll see my phone number and use that phone number to log into Metro using my pin?

Are you now using the phone on t-mobile or another carrier? I'm wondering if it works on verizon 5g or if this model isn't whitelisted.
